I have seedlings which are maturing. They have a few set of real leaves and are about 7 inches tall. How do i know when its time to get them veg nutes?
If they are seven inches tall you should be feeding them. I start seedlings when they get there first set of alternating leaves but everyone is different. A good baseline is two weeks old.
Give them 1/4 strength now. If they pick up and don't show symptoms of burning, go to 1/2 next week...then go to 3/4 the next...then full strength by the time they're about a month old. That's how I do it...more or less. It may not be the quickest...but it doesn't usually burn anyone.
Do they look like this? It's 14 days since planting. It's ready to start eating "big girl" food. I do have nutes in my mix though. Espoma starter mix, it's 4-3-5 or something, and it's got beneficial's. I like to go fairly "organic" in the very beginning and then I start using the chemocal ferts.
They'll take WEAK nutes before that... try 1/16th or 1/8th strength on just a couple...see what you think. My plants don't lose their color until they're well into veg...
Take a look...
These are getting a 1/8th Sensi Grow A/B...they're 10 days from popping up.
These were just transplanted at 17 days...and the cotyledons are just turning yellow. They're getting 1/4 strength. Next week they'll get 1/2, then 3/4, then a few weeks of full, before they're ready for flowering.
It's 100F in there with those plants, that's why they're canoeing. Sometimes, to get ANY crop, you gotta grow where you can.
the thing that confuses most....if not all peeps starting out is the recomendations on nute strength. people tell newbs "go 1/4, then 1/2, then 3/4 strength etc". or they will talk in ppm's like "start at 300ppm, then 600ppm....etc."
but 1/4 of what strength, or 300ppm at what acale .7, .64, or .5, or some other conversion factor. what need to be said is what ec should be fed.
heres a little chart with commonly used conversion factors converting EC readings to PPM.
Seedlings(with 2 or more sets of true leaves)--> .5 ec== 350ppm @ .7, or 250ppm @ .5
early veg(once vigorous growth starts) 1.0-1.2 ec== 700ppm-840ppm @.7 or 500ppm-600ppm @ .5
transition----> 1.0-1.2 ec== 700ppm-840ppm @ .7 or 500ppm-600ppm @ .5
Peak Bloom--->1.2-1.7 ec== 840ppm-1190ppm @ .7 or 600ppm-850ppm @ .5
finishing (last 2 weeks) plain un-adjusted Reverse Osmosis water, or PH corrected Tap Water, or store bought gallons of distilled water un-adjusted.
depending on what meter you have it will have one of the dozens or pre-set conversion factors, or you wight have an adjustable conversion factor, either way ec is the important measurement, as ppm or tds readings are just EC readings converted with the respective conversion factor that manufacter uses, I.E.= HANNA used to use a steady .5 conversion factor, were 1.0 EC is multiplied by 500 to give you ppm's which would be== 1.0 EC is 500ppm's @ a conversion factor of .5
that's all good and said but here is the truth you can feed your plant high Nutes and then your PPM is going to build up and your roots are going to get root lock and the next thing is your not going to flush all your EC out by harvest and your Buds are going to taste like shit, 1/4 teaspoon to gallon of water and then next feed just good Ph balance water for soil and you will have nice healthy plants that taste good
im gona use canna tera vega, now i know when to start feeding, but do i feed every time i water? or i make one bucket with water and nutes and the other just water?
