When To Go Into Flowering

When do you know when it is the right time to go into the flowering stage (12/12)?

depends on a number of factors, but if you're growing from seed the plants should be flowered when they are sexually mature, that is, when they present preflowers and alternate branching. Depending on the strain this will happen anywhere from the 18th day or so of veg (early) to 30-40 days of veg. You can flower earlier, but it will affect yeild. You can veg them for as long as you want before flowering once they are sexually mature. They'll just continue to grow :smile:

It also depends on how ur growing, ie what technique, plating density, ..for instance, if you were growing with high density planting for a SOG, you might only have a couple of days of veg time ....this is of course from clones....

That also depends on your growspace. In my flowering cabinet I want 'em to TOP OUT at around 24", so if I start flowering with plants taller than 8 or 10 inches, I got troubles.

For me, that means to grow them to sexual maturity, I have to keep topping them. The GOOD news is that topping means more branches, and as Big sez, more branches = more buds.

Now clones are different. They come out sexually mature (sounds kinda dirty, don't it?) so you just veg them until they're as big as you want.

Griff, If you are talking about the seeds you germed last week, you're probably looking at around June 1st or later before you flip them.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Ledhed, yes they are the seeds I germed last week, what do you mean by 'topping'? Sorry for all the questions but I am quite new to all this.

Topped means cutting the top so that 2 new ones grow out. I usually grow to 18 to 22 inches and then flower. I usually dont get much stretch during flowering like most people....dont know why.

depends on the height that you want the little girls. If you have the space let them grow large, then 12/12

The variables are endless. Much has to do with strain, room size, lighting, and maturity. For example as bluevelvet said a seed grown immediatly in 12/12 will decrease yield. Clones on the other hand are mature and can be grown from roots without much decrease in yield. Room size is important because after flower time is induced the plant will stretch 25-100% depending on the strain. Lighting is important variable to think of because depending on the wattage of your light you don't want a plant(s) too big for your light size. For example, flowering a 4-6 foot plant under a 150 or 250w HPS is a waste of veg time and light IMO. Personal preference is also a major factor as well. There are many other variable, some small and some large but I could be sitting here for hours typing them out. Largest one to me though would be the strain your growing.
