I started at around 8 PPM and after a couple grows I'm at around 30 PPM.At what point do you decide to change filters?PPMagewise

I chnage the filters every six mths and the membrane every yr...also I use a prefilter before the water enters the RO machine....There,s lotsa crud in water..Filters are cheap so best to change quite often..membranes do last a lot longer if you have a way to flush em,out....

I used to be responsible for maintaining the RO's we had for our dialysis unit. I hate to say but I forgot whjat the specs were. However, if you have a good prefilter and carbon filter before your membrane, you will be much better off.

Real helpful huh? :)

depending on if you have a prefilter before your r/o system, you can go as long as 1-1 1/2 years without a filter change. TDS is an excellent indicator of water quality and good reverse osmosis water is under 20ppm.

your membrane does NOT need replacing every year. depending on water quality and whether or not a prefilter is present your membrane can last for 5-7 years. also, the more water you run through the r/o, the better it works. more water running through the membrane keeps it cleaner and lasting longer.

water quality varies in different areas so no one can tell you by age when to change filters. TDS is the best indicator for when to change filters. So just keep an eye on TDS and when its in an unacceptable range, change em out.

The reason I change filters and membranes so often is due to fact I am on a well system with bad water and it does require frequent filter changes. My well ppm is at 1000+ and full of iron/manganese..can,t even do laundry or safely cook with it.
With treated water n a city the water def.is better and quite pure I wish I had a supply from the city.Wells can be a bitch.

jarff - what does your r/o get your TDS down to? im curious to know because 1000ppm is just insanely high mineral content. changing filters every 6 months sounds about right with such bad water.

do you use a water softener on your house? if not, sounds like you should be. wouldnt want any health issues to arise from using such terrible water.

My RO tds usually runs near zero..(.20) there abouts..My set-up has a read-out digital gauge which gives a read out of TDS,filter change time, when the membrane is flushing, etc.I also have a UV set up on it also and a booster pump due to having low pressure on my well.
I have a salt type whole house water purifier which is a big nuisance but it does make the tap water alright for laundry ,cooking, etc.
I am thinking of installing a whole house RO system at about 5K which is costly but it would be nice to have pure water. The water purifier I have for the house needs regular maintenance but it just doesn,t quite cut it as an RO system would.
We have a lot of coal mining in the area and that is what makes most wells here so bad.

zero TDS from 1000ppm? you must have a very good r/o with di filters maybe?

whole house r/o systems are great but can take up a good amount of space in the garage for the storage tanks. i have always wanted one though.
also most homes arent equipped for a whole house r/o system because you need plastic piping all throughout the home. so generally only newer homes could install one...or possibly mobile homes. but youve probably already considered this...

Yes my house is about ten yrs old and most of the plumbing is plastic.Copper isn,t used much in my neck of the woods. As for using an amount of RO water ,there is just me and the wife left so we don,t use water like a big family does.So a whole house system is quite sensible in my situation.I can do the installation myself which saves a lot of cash.I have been looking at new and used systems and haven,t yet decided which way to go.A used system for 5 K is probably worth double that, but one must be careful what one buys or you get burned.
The small RO system I have now cost $600 +and it has two carbon filters, two pre filters,UV chamber, and a gauge basically telling youwhat the tds is at different times and according to the amount you are using.I have yet to see the TDS over .170.
As with all ro systems there is a certain amount of water you can get in a day .I can get about 75 gallons /day with the ro on a timer to come on every hour.It suffices for the use I intended it for.+I get all my drinking and cooking water from it as well.
