If i have a 6 week strain for example

would day 1 of flowering be when i flip to 12/12

or when i first start to see the pre flowers

I have always counted it as the day that preflowers appear, not the day that the lights are flipped. Never have understood in all these years why anybody would base flowering time off of the light schedule instead of the plant itself, that doesn't even make sense to me.

I think counting from the flip is a good starting point. Ex. If you have a 45 day strain, start checking trichs after 45 days from the flip; even though the plant may have another 2ish weeks to grow. In other words, flip time is the start of your finish window. And (using 45 day example) 59-60 days from flip is the end of your finish window. Hope that makes sense, cause Im having trouble following me right now. Haha cheers

Some people (myself included) count from the day the lights are flipped because that's the only 100% deterministic and objective milestone.

On a side note, I'm curious... Preflowers? I always have preflowers before I even flip the lights to 12/12, am I misunderstanding what you mean there?

The time required to reach maturity at flowering depends upon where the plant is starting from. From seed a plant needs a certain amount of time to reach a mature enough stage to be able to start flowering. Once this growth stage has been attained, it doesn't have to be repeated, so that any clones from this plant will already be at this preflowering stage. So a clone from an established mother will attain ripeness with ambering trichomes, in fewer days of 12/12 lighting than a seedling would.

I like Grass Land's approach above. Flip is a great day to remember and if you are running a six week strain, let a few go to seven and be amazed.NS
