When do you cut your clones for outdoor?

Hello.. Thought maybe we could have discussion about the timing of cutting clones for outdoor plants. And have you found a difference in growth rates by taking them at different times? Do you cut according to the moon? For my climate i try to have all of em cut by mid march so there well rooted and put out mid may. What works for you guys??

About the same... I did a side by side last year and I'm going all seed... just better growth all around... check out farmers Almanac for best lunar phases...
Happy growing

yeah seeds do have the advantages sometimes, but clones do to. Favorite pheno of certain strain, elites.. if the clones are big enough when you put them out they get just as big as the seed mother it was taken from. I would love to hear your guys/gals thoughts on this?

example: same strain, same spot, put out the same day, (both were top cuts)one plant was cut on april 1, the other was cut mid march, which do you think grew better?

I just threw mine in the ground today, crazy Nor Cal weather. We are do for 80 degree weather im gonna take advantage of it. On a typical we'd try and get em in by 4-20 but we have had a crazy ass winter

About the lunar phase:

New moon - Roots and shoots are strengthened
Increasing phase of moon - the roots rest, the leafage are developed
Full moon- the roots are developed, the leafage are slowed down
Decreased phase of moon - Roots and leafage rest

Exist 12 constellations and influence the four elements in different days

Earth - root - Virgo, Capricorn, Taurus

Water - leaf - Scorpio, Pisces, Cancer

Air - flower - Libra, Aquarius, Gemini

Fire - fruits - Sagittarius, Aries, Leo

rooting out clones now.

putting clones out starting late may. later finishing strains go out first, fast flowering strains go out middle june-last part of june.

if the clones are taken off flowering females they are more prone to premature flowering, hence must put out middle june on. if clone is not heavily indicating and is a late flowering strain then can go out after may 15th usually.

kinda "go by intuition" after getting the hang of it. learn from experience for me.

my thought is that a clone taking from that mother plant might get as big (but not as bushy) as the mother plant BUT that a seedling germinated around the same tie as the clone was taken, will outgrow the clone and the mother.
seedlings are just the perfect fit for outdoors. they have more drive, are more hardy etc.
for outdoors (guerilla) i prefer seedlings over any clones or mums. although it is a pain to get rid of the males.

just my observations... :tiphat: happy season to each and everyone :ying:

I took a few cuts in jan that are about 3-4 ft now that are outside, with a bit of supplemental lighting at night to avoid flowering early. mainly i'm working with seed stock this year, and they were started in feb.

Hey thanks you guys K++!!
Do you guys find that cutting clones earlier you have to transplant more before they go out?
I try to go by lunar phases and it does seem to help a little.. but mostly when time allows.
From my experience clones are bushier but i try to take mostly top cuts. and put them out as early as i can(last frost)
Idiit.. I also plant around may 20th, and agree bout taking cuts from flowering plants.
everyone thanks again!!

I just sprouted the seeds I will use as my mothers a week ago. I won't make clones until the end of may and I'll put them out the last week of june like I do every year.

^^ i've found that letting a clone go too rootbound stunts growth until the transplant establishes good root system after tp.

logistical problem with transplanting large pots od. smaller pots easier to carry into od grow areas.

experience, intuition great guides.

I cut clones a month ahead of time usually. 2 solid weeks to root, 2 solid weeks to veg a little , then I kick their asses out.....outside that is. last year was a different story though. I was forced to put barely rooted cuts outside. Those 3"-4" clones grew into some of the biggest plants I have ever grown. Had a 2 lb. monster in the swamp, and a bunch of lber's .

I start seeds for the next year as soon as I'm done trimming outdoor from that year. Usually in late November/December. I like to flower a few plants of each strain inside before I run them outdoors. If something does good inside for me, I know it will blast outside.

smokey.. by putting them out later, reduce their size/yield?

idiit..Definitely, root bound also seems to make them want to flower. My early cuts usually fill 2 liter bottle with roots when there ready to go out.

frankenstein2...That's what im gonna try this year, first round of cuts was cut late march, second round 1 april, third round was 6th... just wanna see how the growth is.. thinking same thing, the less there under artificial light the better they will grow...

good tips you guys!!! K++

Yeah. Smaller plants will always decrease yield. I want the size to stay reasonable. There are too many choppers in the area I do my guerilla growing in. Every year that I've had plants 6ft or bigger the assholes would find them. I plant them at the end of june and they grow to about 4-5 ft after being tied down twice. They blend in with all the natural foliage once they're tied down.

In the crappy North-East........ I plant small clones on May 30th.
Its easy to get bugs, PM, budrot, deer, wind, rippers, pigs, you name it! Plants have a ton of crap stacked against them in this area.
A successfull outdoor crop depends on strain, size, area, plot location in said area, security, smaller plants, yahdda-yahdda.
I always use 10lb test green braided fishing line at 3' and 6' for deer.

I keep them smaller by putting small rooted clones out later in the month of May. Use 10 -15gln pots to restrict size.
I keep them tucked in behind other vegatation, and shorter, so they cant be seen if someone where to walk by. Of course theres nothing that can be done about smell other than strain choice.
Keep the pots tied down with twine and tent stakes for those windy days. Nosey animals can pull over a plant while snooping through the top soil. You'll have a boomarang for a plant when you pick it back up. LOL We dont want that now.

Never settle for a shaded spot. Keep looking. Always put them where they get uninterupted sun for atleast 6 -8 hours.
Hallway type openings along the woods edges are great spots. They blend in and its harder for choppers to see them.

Have a few completely different areas, with a few plots apiece, that are seperate from eachother.
With untested strains, grow only 1 plant of each strain, so if it doesnt do well you dont loose the whole plot.
I have a special plot just for feminized autos. Its in more of a suburb area in a friends backyard so we plant autos that are small and done in 90 -100 days. When the regs are just in flower mode, Im harvesting the autos.
Go ahead and stack that plot, if you do autos for a decent quicky harvest. 50? No problem. Who cares anyways... there fem autos.

With untested plots, grow 1 or 2 there. If it does well, then go for it next year. Its usually the smell that alerts a straggeling traveler to the location of your money trees. If 1 plant makes it, then you know that no-one has been around the plot close enough to smell it.

With untested partners, grow a couple with them. If it makes it without getting ripped the day before the planned harvest, then the partner is becoming more trustworthy. Go abit bigger next season.

Good luck everyone! Happy growings.....Stay Safe!
