I'm not sure if this is due to compost thats inapropriate for seedlings, as last run I had probs on 2 plants that seemed similar to this but not as bad, or if there is something else going on. Grown under cfl lighting so far, small seedlings, watered at ph7, the natural ph of tap water here, no food other than whats in the compost. Can't see any pests other than fungus gnats, this is their family home, theyve been here for years and never really done any noticable damage. Can't see any other pests. This is the uk, so its pretty humid constantly, temps have been on the low side, but not as bad as they were in the winter, distance from the light source is fine. I can't think of anything else to add here, so Q's or guesses apreciated.

no food for seedlings, no compost, no teas no nothing. Just fert free soil or coco or rockwool but no food.

you are frying them. transplant to fert free seed starting mix now. No food for the first two weeks.

You need to bring your water ph down. 7 is too high. You need to know the ph of th erunoff relative to the water in. Just bring it down slowly until 6.3 -6.5 in = 6.3 to 6.5 out.

I would get rid of the fungus gnats, the larvae in your soil eat root hairs and spread disease. Use Bti (mosquito dunks, aqua-bac, gnatrol, etc....in your watering)

i have to agree with pete it seems like it may be a little to much compost....more so, to me it looks like to much P...and i see a burnd tip...to much N would make'm yellow and to much K gives signs of a start of mag def...

and lowerig the ph a bit could't mind ether :2cents:

Hi Guys, yeah it's not my one of my usual composts, just one that was available easily. I was going to grab my usual stuff in the next few days, but if its merely a case of being too hot, I can fix that easily enough just by underwatering a bit a raising the lights causing a bit of stretch. That will also cut the numbers of fungus gnats to a minimum while the seedlings are still strengthening up. I'm not going to bother adjusting the ph though, as I dont want them getting used to a new ph level, for so many reasons that it isn't worth going into. I just hadn't seen this on so many plants at the same time, and would normally toss only a couple showing these signs. Well thanks all.

:joint:wow headypete wats with the hostility...what are you the ultimate grower er sumthn:joint: dont listen to this guy every1 makes mistakes:joint: as long as you end up with the buds at the end haha

Dagnabit, thanks bud, yeah I did understand what you meant. The raising of the lights was to induce stretch and get the short term requirement for nutes higher since the supply of nutes was too high over the last few days. When you are talking about hot compost, those nutes are only released when water is added, so reducing the available water will also reduce the availability of the nutes to the plants. The reduced supply of nutes and the combined higher requirement for nutes should help to correct this problem, hopefully :).

Hi Jack, thanks for for the support, the guy clearly didn't bother to check my galleries before posting his comment.

Hey Core, still got my back, thanks mate.

Hi Pete, people don't grow plants, plants grow themselves, all we can do is learn not to hurt them along their way. But in this case I did hurt them along their way, so you have a point in what you say, though I assure you my mistake was due to laziness rather than ignorance and wanted to make sure that there wasn't something going on that I wasn't aware of. So I opened my mistake up to everyone else. We can all post only our successes, but to benefit ourselves and the wider community, its also helpfull to post our mistakes and discuss them. That's what I did. Do you really think that openly trying to put me down makes me look bad though? Who did that really make look bad? Its a pitty really that you had to post again, you see the first response was the type that was really helpfull, had you left it there you would have looked good, recieved the rep I left ya, and generated no bad will at all.

I was referring to your comment about tossing the burnt ones out...so you were lazy...relax, don't be so serious like that jackass Skellington who obviously can't mind his own business.

Obviously with over 4000 posts here I assumed you know what you were doing and I hardly think you need the backup from drive by trolls.

That's right, don't listen to me and I will forfeit my IC Mag paycheck because I so obviously don't know what I am doing...how did I ever get hired here in the first place?

i have to agree with pete ....................................................................................................................................

Hi Pete, can we leave it at no hard feelings? I don't know what history you and Jack have if any, I don't know much about either of you. You clearly feel strongly as you put some effort into collecting the quotes, although being out of context I have no way to know what generated them. Nor do I have any idea waht you are talking about when you talk about being hired at Icmag, if you get a salary, I want a raise lol. All I wanted to do with this thread is make sure I haven't missed anything, what I was particularly worried about was whether it could be a fungal problem, as it kinda looked more funky that straight nuting issues.
You have to admit that anyone reading what you typed cold, without seeing any facial expression or hearing any jokey tone (which is impossible I realise) would assume it a little arsey, but if it was merely a friendly dig, which I never mind, (I even agreed you had a point when I thought you were being arsey), then hey, just one of those situations that come around once in a while. Thanks for reposting and clearing the air, like I said, no hard feelings I hope.

Of course no hard feelings GMT. I do see how my quip could be taken wrong....I apologize for that. I just want you to find an answer to your question.

What I did not appreciate is this:

The salary stuff is just snark, no one gets paid here, but the point is I spend my free time here to help people, not get abused at the first misunderstanding...

GMT, i dont know if you solved this problem yet but if the compost you were using wasnt too rich and overfertilisation wasnt the problem there is a possibility that is could be Phosphorus deficiency. germinating seeds and seedlings do need a reasonable amount of phosporous. high iron and zinc levels will lock up phosporous as will higher ph's and too-wet soil.

you could try watering at around ph6.

i could be wrong but its worth looking into if you havent nailed it down yet - i had a similar looking problem on one seedling recently when all the rest were fine. i think it is also strain/seed dependent.

Hi Verdant, thanks for the comments. The soil was far too wet to begin with, and the poor start that those plants had was too much for em. Others have taken to the compost well, even if it isn't an ideal type. All the ones featured have now been slaughtered, which I left far too long to do. I've kept a couple of the better ones, and restarted a new batch now, in the same compost lol. You are right about it being seed dependant too.

no worries GMT

i think you were right to get rid of them - my plant (DP Flo) that was affected picked up but never really prospered after that - only yielded about a quarter oz when the other 3 plants in my 250hps cab were near 2oz each.

out of interest, these are the replacements, same seeds, same compost, only diff is that these were grown under a 400w hps on 12/12 rather than cfl under 24/0. They seem much happier.

Whats up with the tri-formation on the leaves, is there something that makes them do that , or is it genetics? Lookin nice and green by the way!

Hi Booger, its genetics, I try to breed em to grow that way, though they dont all do it yet.
