What's the scoop with Langbeinite?

Specifically Down To Earth brand. Does anybody use it? Is the chlorine rate acceptable?

Since it's marked "Langbeinite" this tells you that this is the form as it comes out of the ground. This mineral compound is sold commercially under the K-MAG label and from that company they offer 3 versions and it's their Standard that you want, straight Langbeinite. K-MAG's other 2 versions are the source of the warnings you've read about and with good reason.

At the retail level this product is sold under the Sul-Po-Mag name (Sulfur-Potassium-Magnesium) and like Azomite, the name on the box could be any fertilizer company's name as long as the name "Sul-Po-Mag" appears on the box prominently.

At farm stores this is sold as Sulfate of Potassium Magnesia which is straight Langbeinite.

Go lightly on using this compound because all 3 elements are water soluble and it's the Magnesium (Mg) that you should be aware of given the problems associated with uber levels.

There are 2 ways to use this - add to your soil mix which I would not recommend. The other is to dissolve this with clear water and apply to your soils. 1/2 oz. to 1 gallon is generally safe and even then I can't see where an application more than 2x in an 8 week cycle would be helpful - probably the opposite.

I think the main reason to use it is for a quick shot of K and mag in early flower building. Its soluble, like Cootz said so go easy, and take into account your other mag and K sources if you decide to use it.

I have used it in soil mixes, but got some burning after when i used fertilizers with high K levels, so now i just use it twice in a drench feed, at the flip to 12/12, and about three weeks in flower.

On my medicinal crops i really don't see a huge difference but on my vegetable garden, it was really noticable. I think i seen such a dramtic difference because of my sandy soil does not hold elements well. When my tomatoes started to flower i gave them some sul po mag and had many dozens of new flowers in days......scrappy

Langbeinite is part of the dynamite soil recipe given to me by Eighths & Aces. It calls for 1 cup/14 gals.

1/4 tea spoon top dressed week 6-7. Some people dissolve it in water and feed it that way. I prefer controlled dosing. I also like to feed it with some sea bird guano high P kind up to 0-12-0. Also you can do a tea spoon of it at the bottom of your buckets before you add soil or rock. spray the inside of your buckets with a molasses solution to increase teh effectiveness. take it up a notch sprinkle another table spoon of of aged chicken manure on top of it. 11-12-2 seas bird guano is great here too. The high salt content at the bottom of the bucket or in combo with the sea bird keeps the fly population down. The salt helps inhibit anaerobic growth. This is an old trick i picked up from organic container farmers. You can use Epsom salt the same way.

I use it all the time in my soil. I have the granular DTE stuff. I add it to top dressing mixes or just top dress with it plain if the soil needs both K and Mg. Like cootz said the Mg in it can cause antagonism in other nutrients if you already have plenty Mg. If I only need K and no Mg I use potassium sulfate.
