what's the point of germination?

I directly planted a seed into a pot and it sprouted in 5-6 days, and same thing with another plant, another one took about 2 weeks or more, and another has been 2+ weeks, does it speed up sprouting?

is this how you germinate:

just put the seed in a moist paper towel on top of a warm place like a refrigerator and after 24 hrs when it cracks plant it?

That is germination, my friend....When you germinate a seed, it transforms from a seed to a plant.....How the germination process takes place is in the hand of the "germinator".....It can be the "natural" process, like covering the seed in potting mix, or "artificial", by the papertowel method....LC

you germinated.
congratulations.

a completely different method, of germination., usually used by those growing in hydro an dNOT capable of direct sowing to soil as you already have.

Well germing them is sometimes more practical when viability may be a question. No sense in wasting space on empty akenes.

Lots of different methods but the I like the towel method I feel the point of germing them in the towel is to see if they are even going to crack open if it does not open in there its not going. I dont like wasting space on a bean or sprout that may never pop out. That is the only disadvantage to just putting it in ground you never know if it will even come out. I can only speak for myself but pretty much any seed that I have been able to germ in towel pops out of soil. Just as soon as it cracks open just enough for me to see the tail I throw in the pot and 2 or 3 days later nothing but healthy sprouts. :yummy: works everytime. Good Luck

I love germing in soil. I will usually give the seeds overnight soak in a cup of water first. This is never enough time for the seeds to crack or anything, but greatly speeds up breaking the surface.

well you've all answered my questions, i should've been more specific, "what's the point of germinating in paper towels", but all my questions have been answered,

thanks

YAB try soakin in that cup 1-2 days with a tiny dash of h2o2 added (tap water btw) and watch those tails pop :) use a heat pad on low underneath.

if usin the peroxide the seeds will never sink just float makin it easy to handle and plant.

also ensuring no waste of spaces:nanana:

may take up to 3-4 days strain dependant, dont keep in the water longer than 2, 3 TOPS, and only if usin the peroxide to keep pathogens at bay.

plant to solo cup or square pot of well-mixed/tilled promix with a clean or gloved hand into dibbled soil surface and sprinkle with promix or perlite to cover, up to cotyldons.

Here's a couple of links that may be of interest... :)

:) What is an idiot proof way to germinate seeds? :)

Plant Metabolism 101:
Germination:
Young plants require very few nutrients as their seed pods are filled with simple sugars, amino acids, and hormones.
During this stage plants are very susceptible to shock and should be cared for gently.
Germination works best in warm, humid environments and can be accelerated by adding a root stimulating hormone, like the auxin, naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) an ingredient in products such as Superthrive and seaweed Kelp extracts.

The search feature here may prove to be a great resource for you also.
Lots and lots of relevent reading is usually strongly suggested when first starting out, many questions you may have many times have been answered extensively already. :)

Good luck with your new hobby.
Happy Gardening:)

I like doing this soil volcano on a stack of moist paper towels..it cups the seed nicely and works good..
These seeds were soaked in a shot glass with 4 drops of Superthrive till they dropped(these dropped in about 4 hrs)
I also like to see when or if she cracks open..and I like being able to then orient the seed optimally..
That is the plumule(tail) pointed down in soil...I use a golf tee to make the hole..

48 hrs from seeds in the bag..this is Growdoc's Bubbledust...very easy to germ with super high success rate..

hey there P2P :) whats the point of that there volcano thang?

seems like an extra handling session to me that could be easily avoided if directly sowed to those jiffy pots after the soak, less handling, no?

The volcano thing seems kind of senseless I know..probably is..I just like the way they cradle the seed..
It's not very deep and I like how the peat moss maintains it's moisture consistency..plus the young uns might like dippin their toes in the soil..
I have direct sowed, but I like knowing if it is a viable seed first and make sure the plumule is pointing down..more efficient to get a good foothold..
There are lots of ways to germ..this is just a cheap easy one that I like..

the waiting would kill me... is it growing or not? the paper towel method at leasts gives you some activity and you know if the seed is dead or not. Once the tail comes out.. directly into soil and it cracks the soil in 3 days max.

The reason I use the paper towel method is I know exactly how to do it correctly, and I usually pay 10 bucks a seed so I want them to all germinate.Too many folks keep their paper towels too wet, thats why they dont have success.I just germinated 10 DP fem blueberry and 10 DP fem skywalker and got all 20 to crack,if I'd soaked and planted them I'd have lost a couple,I know from trying many times. The bottom line is what works for you, there's no "right" way its whatever works.A good 2 ply paper towel always works for me.
