SOG is where you grow many smaller single stem plants . Can fit many of them next to each other since no side branching . Looking down on it it is a sea of green.
SCROG is when a plant/plants are trained to grow through openings made in a horisontal screen of chickenwire of made on your own. Many budsites grow through give you an even canopy with many budsites
The main difference is the veg time and plant numbers. Either method gets you a bunch of colas on a level plain, in a perfect world anyway.
A couple things I would like to note:
Its not exactly easy to get 50 consistant clones for a SOG. Or even 20 or 30.
People like SOG for efficiancy (almost no veg = more grows per year) however with a seperate veg room the only thing that dictates how many grows you can do a year is the flowering time of the strain and your ability to plan
So SOG is basically, just let them grow till they are done with no training or cutting? or do you still cut the bottom branches off since they wont get as much light?
can you SOG or SCROG in any type of system? aero system?
On a sog you flower when the clone is 5" tall, during the first few weeks of flowering it will stretch 2x or 3x leaving a harvest height of 10" to 15".
In a scrog you veg them til they are 12" tall or so and begin LST or scrogging. 3 weeks or so in veg, but then you flip them to flower and again they will stretch 2x or 3x. But the goal in scrog is to get 6 colas or so on the same level on the same plant during the stretch.
So a med patient with only 6 plant sites will want to scrog, but someone with 30 plant sites will get the same yeild without the 3 week veg in a sog.
So it depends on how many plant sites you want and how long you want to veg, just like yeilds with all growing methods.
You need to trim any lower branches when you SOG...it's not about light penetration, it's about putting all of the plant's energy into a single cola to make it as large as possible.
Typical SOG densities are from 1 per sq/ft to 9 per sq/ft...my last run I did 36 per 1k in 1 gallon pots of coco and got a bunch of these:
SOG is having a bunch of single cola plants in your grow area. Say for example you took 10 clones from your mother plant. Now you root them and then plant them in some 1 gallon pots. Flower them righ away and you should get 10 colas. ScROG is when you have less plants but you just train them to a screen so budsites can recieve even and maximum light intensity.
I do the SOG differently ...I do not cut away any lower branches in veg ..after I switch to 12/12 and they start showing gender then I cut away a few on each plant . this helps get the buds started fast . then I wait till 2/3 of the flowering time has gone by . in that time I use organic fertilizers and bud enhancers and control watering ..then I use a dry and soak push pull system .and cut about 1/3 of the total branches off the lower plant ,if you time it right the plant is flushing and then growing flushing then growing that's 2 or 3 weeks at the end it has a lot to do with what strains ..a lot of people say I cant throw bud away . but would you rather have level 7 bud or a little less and have level 8 or 8.5 .. less yield better qualities ..you can have a truck load of sh** but no one will want to smoke it ...lol .I never miss the 1/3 of the bud I cut off because it helps why I am watching them ladies in heavy crystal ..the other thing that is nice about this system is you can get very good at judging each plant in its own right .. that way you get the best out of each strain and each plant with in a given strain base ...I can tell you this . if your stem gets light it really dose not matter ....lol so cut away 1/3 to 1/2 the lower plant and you will find the crystal qualities goes way up for the rest of the bud you have worked hard for ...nice cola are worth the time and feeding them the extra sap makes for some nice crystallization ...and if you time it right , those flushing watering you do will make a nice clean sap that will give you a great taste with the touch more crystal, Organic with good under tones ...
TRUE...SOG...has very set parameters. Or it did when it started...
It seems this has been forgotten over time...so I have to keep repeating it...
SOG = 4 plants per sq ft that are flowered immediately after the clones are rooted. This requires 6" square pots.
It is not just plants tightly packed in...or plants trimmed down for single cola growth (called lollipop training)...
Seeing as this thread is old and got a bump...I figured I'd make mention of this here too.
A successful SOG garden usually requires you to cut about 30% more cuts than you plan to actually use. When flowered...you take the cuts that are the healthiest and show the same rooting success, rates of growth, etc...that way when it comes to flower, you have an even canopy across the many plants you have going.
4 plants per sq ft - means under a 1k in a 4x4 you have 64 clones. That means you took about 90 to begin with. This requires large or multiple mother plants...
However, some of the HIGHEST yields possible are achieved with a TRUE sea of green garden. That's why it was developed - to increase yields by growing only the "top cola" style flowers.
Short, stout indica dominant strains are not preferred for this...you need a good sativa hybrid that will give you 3-5x stretch so that you still get good airflow and still gives enough internode stacking to form nice long colas.
Once I find a good 12wk plant to SOG - I'll put up a journal of how it SHOULD be done. Seems too many have forgotten...
