what's a reasonable time to wait for slow germing seeds from the same pack?

(i'm doing direct seeding into soil)

example: 2 out of 4 seeds germinate within a few days, rest doesn't do shit for another week. (i dug 'em out after that, one i couldn't find, other one only had a very small taproot)

then i germed 5 seeds of another strain - 2 came out after a few days, the other 3 haven't so far.

i'm getting nervous, coz if they don't come out at all, i have to germ a few seeds more SOON - before the other plants are too far ahead of the rest.

(this is a non-perpetual 400 W grow from femmed seed, shooting for 6-8 plants to fill the box)

always plant more than you want to grow, and never dig them up. Reasonable is for the grower to decide, but i've had them come up as late as 4 weeks after the first of them.

I disagree with your "never dig them up" comment. I've successfully saved several seedlings that way, but you need a steady hand and have to be extremely careful.

wow 4 weeks... that would really fuck up my plans :D
are late-comers viable plants just like the ones that germ much earlier? (i'm talking about small seed packs - not large batches of seeds, or does that make no difference...)

i've only grown from seed twice before and each time the whole pack germed within 2-3 days of each other.

I would mark the slow ones so you can follow them. I find many times they are slow for a reason but there are times where the slow ones were the best.

When seeds are old, some of them turn dormant.
In that case it can take indeed up to 4 weeks before they pop, while many will pop at irregular intervalls.

Great remedy is to shake them in a match box with course glass paper glued to the bottom for about 2 minutes.

thanks for the answers.

guess i'll have to stick it out.

the seeds should be fresh - they were bought in nov. directly from the respective seedbanks.

That's some weird shit BG.
I only had this happen when I was doing soil composition tests at different levels of 'cooking' & at extremely high Ec levels with hemp seeds in large numbers.

What did you do differently as before?

Oh, and if seeds are like 6+ years old then many of them might 'runt' like that too.

i recently had tails showing either, but the tails stayed a tail and turned brown after a week
so i am guessing that i had it too wet after they popped and maybe not warm enough, which is crucial

happened to me first time either.. but those seeds where quite old and not sure if they where stored properly
or even viable right from the start..

never keep them too wet after you see tails
the roots need a lot of oxygen especially in this stage till it digs down the soil
showing tails i believe should be sign enough that the seeds is prepared to grow for further nutrients
of course the soil should not be dusty either.. but i definitely had it too soaked then

when they found weed growing in the back yard of the governor's mansion in colorado the "official" story was that they were hemp plants:biggrin: not marijuana ........ and that hemp seed can sit dormant in the ground for decades.:abduct:

if you believe that shit then you should keep them beans wet for at least another 20 years ........ just in case:tiphat:

Kept-moist-while oxinated-at-sub-germ-temperatures and kept-wet-while-deprived-of-oxigine-at-germ-temperatures sure makes a hell of a difference GM ^^

Some seeds can handle pretty much everything, some seeds can't handle almost nothing.

i'm pretty sure whoever wrote the press release for the governors "hemp seed smokescreen" was deprived of oxygen at the time

scary part is that half the population probably found that story more logical than the governors teenage daughter planting dope in daddy's back yard

If seeds have been stored just a bit too moist inside a small plastic baggy, some invisible mold will appear and destroy them from the inside.

There will be a distinct smell when this has happened.
