people get caught when they open there mouth and police get tips. simple as that. or people get careless and start buying to much nice shit. gotta have a nice front if your gonna buy nice things and make sure your paying your taxes. LEO gets a tip from someone, and that someone is not the grower
the grower tells someone, and the death spiral begins

Oh man I tweak out on this a lot and read every bust story I can. It boils down to a small set of circumstances usually.

1. Stealing power - lots of larger ops caught this way
2. Narc'd - this seems more common with folks who are criminal types, these busts often include other hard drugs like meth and guns, and often the person or their associates were generally under investigation
3. Domestic - fightin with the wifey and the 5-0 comes.
4. Obvious idiocy - growing in the back yard in a non-mmj state, no filtration and venting out the window, etc.
5. Caught by neighbor - reported "suspicious activity", more of an issue if you run an op in a house you don't live in, but can also happen if your sloppy and get seen with contraband through a window etc.
6. Act of god - house fire, someone drives a car through your wall, etc.
7. Investigated - Usually only higher profile criminals, asian and mexican gang members are big targets
8. Surveilled at grow store - Popular in the south-east, in other areas I'd be more worried about been targeted by thieves. But it's no secret many have been busted by going to the grow store in their own cars or by being followed after - Florida, Kansas, Missouri, etc.
