What type of pots should i choose?

Hey all,

My flowering cabinet can have 6 plants in it at the most. I want to maximize the amount of soil (i use organic 100% nutes/soil) that is in my flowering chamber.

The cab space to put pots is L48" X W18.6" and so far i'm sticking to shorter indica strains.

Are square pots, such as 5g the best to go with?
Are those 5g black bags pretty easy to use as well? They seem a lot cheaper but can they be easily picked up/moved around?

Pots have the nice ability to put SCROG nets above them, as well as pretty easy to move around/carry.

I have also heard of people using rubbermaids, and placing 2 plants inside the rubbermaid and the entire thing full of soil.

Most likely I will be taking cuttings from my mom's, allowing them to root, and then throwing them into the flowering chamber. Am I wrong that a clone put into 12/12 in a 5g pot will produce more then a clone put into 12/12 in a 1g pot??

Hope you guys have some ideas... those endless root systems with hydro are pretty impressive, just wanted to ask your ideas on the best soil containers.

Appreciate everything.

i think planting clones in 5g is to over do it , that is if you are going from rooted clone to 12/12. 1-2 g will be enough. or are you talking about planting all of the clones in one pot ? i would go with smaller pots for each plant.

Yes you are mistaken thinking that, too often people say yield is directly related to flowering pot size, this is not true.Yield will be maximized when you utilize the available media wisely which means starting small and transplanting up.If you put a cut into a 5 gal pot and flower it,the roots will just grow along the sides leaving a "big empty" in the middle,a waste of soil.If you go directly into 1 gallon that would be just about right, the root system should fill the bucket nicely utilizing the available media. Then when the root system fills the bucket and you find yourself watering every other day,its time to pot up a size if you want to veg longer.Using available media wisely is the key,not necessarily finishing pot size

Brainlab - Ya i did mean individually potting the clones, I am able to have up to 6 plants in my flowering chamber (WA med card) so I thought I would want all the soil possible, seems like maybe not unless Im going to veg.

The American - Thanks for the advice really appreciate the explanation. I guess i thought that since the roots in like a 5g bucked would have a huge expansion so would the buds up top.

I have 1g pots now, gonna possible get a few 2-3, just to see if any yield is greater at the end because they used more soil or were less rootbound. 5g is probably way to much.

Thanks tons

You will then want to use a pot that is relatively deep for its volume. Deep square 5.5" pots (about a quart) are very nice for this. I think there's pics in my gallery that show them.

That's quite large!

I'm not a huge fan of grow bags for the simple reason that they don't drain as well as rigid pots, and tend to trap moisture underneath, giving pests and mold a place to take hold. If you go with bags, put them up on a grate such as a cookie cooling rack.

Yup it's done but quite honestly if you have problems at some point they will be a bit harder to isolate and solve with multiple plants per container.

No, not at all.... IF said clone has been vegged long enough to warrant being put in a 5 gallon pot to begin with!
One way to think of it is that given space for roots, the plant will try to fill it. That's a lot of energy put into action under the dirt. Furthermore, in too large a pot, some parts simply won't dry out because the roots can't reach all the soil... moisture will just SIT there. That's not good.
A clone flowered newly-rooted at ~5" in SOG can live happily to harvest in a pot made of a half-gallon milk bottle (oooh! It's tall and deep for its volume! YAY!) made lightproof with black spray paint (outside only) or duct tape. Bud on a stick, just like a popsicle...
