What the best carbon to use for a carbon scrubber.

Ok folks, I built a carbon scrubber. It is about 32 inches long and has a 6 inch inner core and an 8 inch outer core to give me a one inch layer of carbon. I made this thing so big to allow for more air flow.

So my question I ask before I buy my carbon, what would be better, the pellet or the granuals? To me since I have so much carbon that I can fit into there, I want to make it last longer. I figure that the pellets will last longer, but if they just suck and not work well then I dont want to use them, But it also seems that the granuals would have an easier chance to fall out of the polyester matting.

Please let me know ur opinions. thanx.

In my experience, the pellets were far more effective than the granules. Usually when you get the pellets its very clean, no dust, no crumbs. I just get that expensive pellet stuff from PetCo (I don't have a huge scrubber), in the clear bottle. When I got granulated carbon it had a bunch of dust and crumbs that dirtied up my growroom and filter, and wasn't as effective at removing smell.

Second opinions though, especially for larger scrubbers? Just my experience.

Does anyone have any idea of how many pound of carbon that I might need for my sized scrubber? Like what would be a safe amount to get? 10 lbs, 25 lbs, 50 lbs??

Hello all,

I use a 4X6 granulated virgin coco activated carbon.

It was about 80 bux for 50 pounds (1.666 cubic foot) delivered to me.

I have enough to last for awhile- its been 6 months on my first batch and not so much as a hint of smell-it works awsome.

I use a SunIsShining style filter constructed specifically for my cab. I use about 18 lbs which should give me about 3 runs for 80 bux.

I would not waste time on cat crystals- yes they work but are not as effective as carbon. The cat crystals (activated silica) are better used as a desicant (absorbs moisture) then a odour adsorbant. And to back my point on this- if cat crystal were as effective they would use it instead of AC.

Good luck.

Your volume is:

pi*(8^2-6^2)*depth/12^3 = 1.63 cu.ft. of AC
