What techniques are used to determine electrical usage???

Does anyone know how the power comapny monitors electical use?

I know the digital smart meters can detect them determine when somemthing goes one or off and how many watts were used.

I dont have that problem since I have an old style power meter, but the other day a worker was working at the pole that feeds my house. He appeared to be working on the main power line but I cant be sure. he had a back box with a cable that went to a line clamp that went around the power line

he said he was checking for static

It made me wonder, could a device like that be installed to moniter my usage since the old analog meter I have does not support monitoring?

That is to say does anyone have exerience with the electic company using devices to monitor electic use other than the power meter itself

Not heard of this And have some friend in that line of work. So i called him HE said they have things to check for static charge(what ever that is ) BUT IT should be connected to the main line AND NOT the line coming to your place. Can you see witch one it is connected to?

I called one of my friend he said the same as your friend

and yes he was checking the main line
