You choose a fan based on your lighting. More lights = More heat = More ventilation.

Once you have a fan properly rated for your space and ventilation needs then you choose a filter than matches the CFM of the fan.

In your case, 13'x15'x8?' is 1560 cubic feet. Which is a lot of space. Minimum ventilation is typically once every 2 minutes, so a 780cfm rated fan may suffice if the intake temperature is low enough and there aren't a lot of lamps filling the grow space. On the other hand, a 3000cfm rated fan would be much better suited if the intake temperatures are not low enough.

Whatever the case, you need to match your fan to your filter. Personally, I would go with the 12"x39" filter and a 1700ish CFM fan.

I know that the 8x24 doesn't quite do it, so if it's really important i would listen to SC!

guys are you sure that a 12" fan isnt overkill that shit will be loud? during the winter months i use a 6" fan with a dryer duct vent to bring in cold air into a sealed room. the rest of the year the room is totally sealed using a window ac. what do you think now? im guessing i could get away with a smaller one during the months the room is sealed at least no?

if you guys could id like to get recommendations for both times of the year. one for when its sealed and one for a 452 cfm 6" rebel inline fan bringing in cold air

Check out the specs on the Can100
You see how you need to exhaust with a lower CFM than if you are recirculating...

Max Recirculating (Scrubbing) CFM: 1680 cfm / 2800 m³h
Max Exhaust CFM: 840 cfm / 1400 m³h @ 0.1 sec contact time
Recommended Min Airflow: 420 cfm / 700 m³h
Prefilter: Yes
Flange: 8", 10", 12"
Dimensions: (with pre-filter)
·Outside Diameter: 42 cm / 16.5"
·Height: 100 cm / 39.4"
·Weight: 47kg / 103lbs.
·Carbon Weight: 37kg / 81.5lbs.
·Carbon Bed Depth: 6.5 cm / 2.56"
Max Operating Temp: 80ºC
Pressure drop at max cfm: 180pa / .75"wg

Its good to hear you need some filtration!
Hope you have some stinking floppy bitches over there now!
So I take it you've turned things around in your grow now that you are watering more often with higher EC?

sorry you lost me dont really understand what you mean. i def wanna use a phresh filter though. i was told they work better than other filters and you can use a smaller size compared to others. im hoping you guys have used these before

I used a phresh for a year non stop. I replaced it with a can, but it still worked well...
If you dont mind a little smell getting out of the room its ok to use a smaller one, but if you look at the specs on the can you can see that they recommend 1/2 the cfm for exhaust as they do recirculation...I wouldnt try it the other way around in my room.
6" probably isnt gonna handle your room...
BTW... The stores near me blow those phresh filters out for like 2/3 what they are asking online without shipping.
Have you been to the Phresh site? They have a calculator...
http://www.phreshfilter.com/about/size-selector.aspx
It suggests 1120cfm for your setup
Are you covering the entire room with light? You only have about 1/2 the wattage you need...
You should divide the room

i got 4' x 4' space for each light and i got over a ft on each side of the trays so i have enough room to work on the plants. damn i didnt know someone was gonna say a can was better. the phresh filters are still smaller and lighter right? i hate lugging around big ass heavy filters. i got a big can one from a few years ago and i dont even know how im gonna throw it out i can barly move the shit by myself

so coconutz your sayin even in a room totally sealed i still need a 1120 cfm filter? that means i would need the Phresh Filter 10" x 39" 1400cfm with a 10" fan. i kinda didnt wanna go above an 8" fan cause of the noise.

i know what im gonna do. im gonna get a 8" x 39" 950cfm with an 8" fan and then if i notice smell gettin out il keep an extra 4" filter with fan for backup. im really kinda worried about the noise on a 10" fan plus a little smell can leave the room it just cant leave the house

You light the room, not the tables. You loose a lot of watts per sq ft in an oversized room. You really want your lights overlapping so the plants have a source of light from all angles
Look at the RPM of the fan motors. Larger blades with lower rpms are not too bad.
A lot of the larger fans have about the same noise level, aside from the air noise...
I didnt say they can was better... But they probably are. However, Im with you on them being too fucking heavy. I have a bad back and will probably go back to phresh because they are cheap, light and my room is sealed really well and I dont have anyone near me.
Dont waste your money on 4" anything

to be honest maybe it wont even be nearly as loud as i think. have you seen the rebel inline fans? i got a 6" one and its quiet as shit. monster gardens did multiple tests on youtube and the rebel inline beat out everything else including vortex when it came to wind power. thats not true about the 4" though. i got a 4" fan with a can filter in my mother room and theres no smell at all it works crazy fuckin good. all you smell is a real strong carbon smell. i know its just veg but still shit can be stinky. just for backup you know. its a sacrifice i like to have walking room around the plants so i can move them around plus steak them when i need to. i appreciate all the help everyone

This is backwards...
You want to suck air from the room.
If you push air into the room you will have positive pressure and the smell will leak out of the cracks.
You need to have an intake vent or you will just suck dirt through the cracks.
Put a badass filter on your intake! A properly filtered 4" isnt going to bring in much air at all.

If noise is a concern then you can always add a silencer or two.

http://www.ehydroponics.com/phresh-duct-silencers.html

Put one before and after the fan, include insulated ducting, and you have about as quiet a setup as you can hope for.

Phresh filters are superior. They have a higher grade carbon with larger pores that collects more "stinky" molecules. Their shape and size are specifically chosen and result in better surface contact with the air passing over it than the CAN pellets. I have been using a 6x16" for 5 grows, probably creeping up on 2 years, and it still smells like fresh carbon.

my fault for the delay coconutz ive been busy. so what i did is i turned a bedroom into a grow room and replaced the door with tarp. then like i said before a got a 6" fan bringin in cold air but theres no outtake of air so its causing positive pressure.

so i should now exhaust the air into the rest of the house right? im guessin i have to use the exact same size fan as the intake right? ok so if all this is true how do you suggest i set up the filter on the exhaust? should the filter be outside of the growroom and then i put the fan on the filter and pull air from the room into it or should i put the filter in the grow room and push the air out? im guessing outside the room but il wait for your response

T

TREE KING

ok so i just hooked up the exhaust system. what i did is i put a second filter outside of the room and i have the fan pulling air out of the room into the filter. now the same amount of air thats coming in is goin out. im guessing im all set now right coconutz?
