What should I expect when they install smart meters?

I live in the bay area and just posted about pgne wanting to come In And check my gas meter. Fortunately everything is cool so far but today I got a notice in The mail saying they will be installing smart meters in the next few weeks in my neighborhood. What should I expect when they do this? I'm only worried because my stuff is in week 5 and if my electricity gets shut off then my scrubbers won't work anymore meaning it will smell up my house. The meters are in the garage so that's not a big deal but id imagine having some stuff freshly ready to go and having no scrubbers will smell up my house pretty bad. Can I maybe try to avoid them until after I'm done in about 4 weeks? They said in the next several weeks they'll come by so I'm not sure when to expect them. I also heard there's a way to dispute it so that they can't put new meters in and they have to give you an option. Here's the story http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article/article?f=/c/a/2011/03/10/BUEM1I8M87.DTL

it only takes them about five minutes or less to pop the old meter off and install the new one so you should be good.

quick process, it would have been done in less than a minute if I hadn't made the guy wait until I downed the servers
