What other nutes should I get? Other Questions regarding nutes!

Hello all -

I had 3 NLxGF seeds pop so now are in some Fox Farm Original Soil.

I have Liquid Karma, so What other types of nutrients should i buy?

When can i safely start using Liquid Karma? Should i start as soon as i see it poking through the soil? On the directions it says you can use through all stages(germ, veg, flowering). I'm trying to get this to grow fast and big, so curious if i should start adding stuff.

Throw me some input guys!

Thanks,
marley

If the fox farm soil contains ferts already, you should wait 3 weeks or yellowing begins to apply ferts in your water.

Formulating your own nutrient solutions is fun. You will have to learn to measure your fertilizer in parts per million/so many grams of fertilizer per liter of water. You will need a gram scale and "round up" ingredients for a "recipe". Find a good hydroponic book and it should explain how to mix up nutrient solutions following a formula. Directions are in my signature below.

If this is a hassle, try 20-10-20 peatlite/soilless fertilizer by masterblend or peters. You can find this using the internet for about $20 plus shipping for a 25 pound bag. It is 60% nitrate nitrogen and that is good. It also has elevated levels of micronutrients versus just regular formulations. You will still need a gram scale and learn parts per million. Roughly, 1 teaspoon 20-10-20 is about 250-300 parts per million nitrogen. It does not contain calcium, magnesium, or sulfur so these might need to be added later on when soil supplies of these nutrients begin to run low. Even with a low rate of dolomite lime and gypsum in the soil, I suggest adding a low rate of cal., mag., sulfur along with the regular fertilizer in the water. 1/4 teaspoon epsom salts and 1/4 teaspoon powdered gypsum can be added per gallon of water (3.8L) every third or fourth time you fertilize or every time if supplies in the soil run low. This provides about 30 ppm magnesium and 70 ppm calcium. In bloom switching to less nitrogen and more phosphorus like 10-30-20 may be beneficial although using just a reduced rate of 20-10-20 surprisingly also works. 15-16-17 is excellent in bloom. Both peters and masterblend make this formula. Make sure it says for peatlite or soilless growing on all these bags.

How to figure parts per million using these granular ferts.... For example, if you want to feed seedlings 75 parts per million nitrogen using 20-10-20: 75 mg (mg and ppm are the same thing) x 3.8 liters (we'll make a gallon) x 5 (inverse .2 which is 1 divided by .2 = 5 ;.2 refers to 20% nitrogen the first number in the fert) = 75 x 3.8 x 5 = 1425 mg or 1.425 grams in a gallon of water. If you have a cheap hand held scale, it might be better to make enough for say 32 gallons to be more accurate. 32 x 1.425 grams = 45.6 grams or about 46 grams. Put this in a gallon jug (3.8 liters). This is called a stock. Shake till disolved. Then when you want to make 1 gallon to feed the plants 75 ppm nitrogen, put 4 ounces of the stock in a gallon of water. 4ounces out of stock/128 ounces in stock = makes 32 gallons this strength. To feed larger plants say 150 ppm nitrogen, you would add 8 ounces (double) out of this stock to your gallon of water.

General hydro's Flora nova series is an excellent fertilizer to use. Only requires 1 bottle of grow formula and 1 bottle of bloom formula. No other additives are needed. No occassional application of epsom salts and gyspum will be needed in the water. You should use maybe no gypsum and a low rate of lime in your soil mix because these ferts contain alot of calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. Here is my thread on suggestions for using this including easy to use ml per gallon rates without other measuring like parts per million. http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=38801

Is it fox farm ocean forest?Thats what I use its non-ferted but they shouldnt need ferts the first couple weeks,if you have a flo light keep the lamps 1/2 inch above the plants when they pop the ground to reduce stretch, and keep the lamps 1/2 above at all stages until you move to HID's.I use LK also, but not until the second or third week.

I highly advise cutting that FF with Pearlite (30-50%) - makes growing simpler as you get started - and later too.

I think when a person starts growing the hardest part is having patience.Things are going to be slow at first.Ya have to be careful ya don't luv em ta death tryin to get them ta grow (faster). That being said,I would like ta suggest a method of growing,it's called the K.I.S.S. method.Kiss stands for "keep it simple stoner" lol ever hear of it? I've grown alot of different ways over the years and have gone back to this way of doin it.And why not ya don't need a calculator, chem.formulas, extra micro-nutes,tds meters,ph meter, battery acid, stump remover, broax soap,ph up,ph down, scales,or a PHD in plants hahaha naaa,I've got no use for any of it.All ya need is a teaspoon,a table spoon,a jug ta mix in,and some comon sense, hows that for keepin it simple...Since you went with FF soil why not go with there nutes too:Grow Big,Tiger Bloom, and Big Bloom. There easy to use and work great esp with LK as a stimulator.Well, that would be my suggestion (and has been)for folks jus gettin started.Like it's already been said your plants won't need anything for a while,so be patient. When the time does come to use your nutes jus hollar if ya need help,it's no big deal.Good luck to ya Marley and take care...BC

i will get a 3 pack of the FF nutrients.

I plan to veg these till Jan 22nd'ish. Thats all i have time for. Then i got till March 28th to flower. So hopefully i can make it.

They are under a 400watt HPS with cooltube, but its kept high up.

Will be going into a hydrohut with carbon filter when they flower.

No I wouldn't do the karma yet,let em get a foot hold first.Everything these lil ladys need right now is built in.Your going ta have to be patient,ya can't rush nature, esp at this point.Relax yer going ta make in time! trust me,I'll help ya through the whole thing if I have to,but you will make it.For now jus keep the room temps around the mid 70's 24/7. later,BC

but these guys are under a 400watt hps with a cool tube and a cheap inline fan.

how far should i keep the light away? i'm assuming as far as possible right now, but when i flower to get it closer.

B.C. thanks for the warm welcome and help to growing. ;)

I think you'll be ok with it about 3-3 1/2 feet above em,as long as ya have plenty of air going across the bulb. The bigger and more leaves they get the more you'll be able ta drop it.Useing a 400 watt in a cool tube with a lot air going across the bulb you should be able to almost touch em with it,from alil later in veg clear through the end of flower....Hopfully you get some quick finishing phenos,it won't matter though after 60 days I think you'll be to go whatever the phenos.Btw this is Fem.Seeds nlxgf right ? later,BC
