What kind of vacuum bags do you use?

With harvest season on the cusp, I thought it would be a good time to discuss storage. This will help some, myself included, avoid mistakes that can threaten a crop after all that work.

I've heard one person complain about FoodSaver brand vacuum bags leaving his bud smelling weird. A switch to Mylar was his solution. But I need to be able to see the product.

What brand of vacuum bags do you use? FoodSaver? Rival Seal-a-Meal? ZipLock Vacuum bags?

I store in 2 & 4 gallon frosting buckets as well as mason jars.


Vac bags aren't better storage solution for myself. I don't care for all the crushed bud that I just spent all summer growing. And removing from those bags can prove to be a pain in the ass... creating even more shake!

For personal smoke it's in jars, otherwise it's in vacuum bags. If I used buckets, I'd need a couple hundred so it's not practical for me.
(I only smoke the odd joint at a concert)

I'm also curious what people do for larger amounts. For indoor grow, mason jars have always been plenty for me, but I'm worried with my outdoor plant I will be filling 30 mason jars and moving a hygrometer every day.

One that appeals to me is cutting branches off the stalk, cut off all the large fan leaves, hang to dry for a little more than a week, then putting the whole branch in a storage bin lined with cardboard. Since the bins are not air tight, there's no need to burp them, but you might need to flip it and let it dry out a bit if it gets too humid inside the bin. You can get small digital hygrometers for pennies and put one inside the box with double sided sticky tape to hold it under the lid. Trim and bag when it's at 60%. (I keep some wrapped stalk frozen in case I need to re-hydrate by dropping it into the bin).

There's also an interesting box/freezer drying/curing via sublimation that sounds great, but I can't try that this year.

The bagging process is what I'm trying to get a good grip on. I noticed Walmart has several different types of food grade vacuum bags.

I've heard the bins can impart a plasticky taste to the buds, same as the non mylar vacuum bags? I've never used either though so just going off what I heard.

I've used the ZIPLOC plastic sealed bins for batch curing.
They work pretty well for me.

If you're getting a plastic taste... try washing your storage containers.
Anybody that doesn't wash previous to storage gets what they deserve!
Could be a similar issue with the vac bags. Those never get washed previous to use.

Get a dozen Wide Mouth Mason Jars, 1 L at Canadian Tire for some buds to look at.

Use heavy duty vacuum bags for the rest.

Anyone who vacuums to the point of crushing it deserves it, and should be making Malawi Cobs instead. Come to think of it, I'm making those too

I go to the Dollar store and buy a bunch of their plastic tubs. It's a good idea to test them, make sure they have a strong seal. Keep them in a cool dark place. Does a good job most of the year.
Right now I'm noticing a difference in the smell and potency of last year's. Which I'd expect with ganja after 10 months. I'm guessing the higher summer temperatures may be part of it.

I'm planning to use the food grade bag (rolls) I got on Amazon. My vacuum sealer can be stopped at any point in the evacuation and sealed. Seems like a good solution when you have a good amount to deal with.
