What is this?

I was going through an old heads grow supplies from forever ago and I stumbled across this. It is a carbon filter of some sort, looks homemade, but it has an electrical cord coming out of one end that seems to be attached to some kind of fan(can hear a small him when plugged in)

Asked him about it, but unfortunately the years haven't been good to his memory and he couldn't remember when he got it or what he used it for. Anyone come across one of these before? Intake, exhaust, etc?

You can get flashlight in both muffler and intake now.

Yes, which is why I think its some kind of filter, I just havent seen any with an electrical line attached to it. Trying to figure out if it would be used as an intake filter.
