What is this pest?

Hello,

Last year my plants were eaten except for the buds and sticks, but the cages were left undisturbed. Since the cages fully enclosed the plants I can only assume a raccoon pulled the plants to the side of the cage and ate them. Anyone else have any ideas what could eat the plant without disturbing the cage besides humans... Squirrels are the only other thing I can think of.

These are some recent pics I took of them since they're still around and I'm thinking of trying again:

Also, if you think they're raccoons, then what do you recommend for stopping them this time?

Seems funny that a raccoon ate them never heard of that but I guess it is possible. Maybe it was a deer or something. If you are sure it was a raccoon you can plant some squash bushes around the plants, the raccoons hate the feeling of the squash leaves on their fur and will not walk through them this is how you keep them out of corn.

How well are the 'cages' put to the ground? seems 2me a raccoon would just tear it up and manja da ganja.. are the leaves, or whats left of them, torn off or chewed?:tumbleweed: better pics might help. EDIT: better 'cages' too.

Sounds like snails. Little fuckers attack the base of my plants first but then go after the leaves. I'm going to try using copper around the base of my plants this year.
