What is the minimum cutting that will root?

Stupid question time.

I've read a couple dozen threads and various sources on cloning and am still unclear about what is the bare minimum that you can cut and get it to root?

I'm using the vermiculite, ice cube tray method and vita grow cloning liquid. I feel like I cut too big of clones. It has to be a branch with nodes on it right? I was pretty sure you can't clone small sun leaves. I would like to get more out of my mom plant.

Any pics would be great.

Thanks

correct, it needs to be a growth node. not a leaf

minimum stem length would be at least 1-2 inch because it gives you room to hold, work with, and ease of burying. i got a cut that was very small, it was a growth node but had about 1/2 inch stem on it and was very difficult to handle/move/plant.

i don't have great pics of just a cutting but i have some "examples" i can show you

this is some in the lid, hard to see really...

this is my SD cutting, i didn't trim anything off and it rooted great.

hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick response. I guess I'm doing it right then.......... I think what bugged me about it is that the available branches that I can clone from are too big because I vegged this mom too long without taking any clones so I was left with big branches that get ruined because I need a clone off of it.

I think I am going to try and produce a couple of new moms out of these clones and try to bonsai them from the word go.

If a cutting I took is not going to root...... how fast will it wilt and die?

Thanks

Bury the clones node where the leaves are removed.

Leave at least 1 node on the mother plant branch you took all the clones from.

The picture shows a mother plant branch you could get 2 clones from.

i wouldnt go smaller the SUb cuttings personally i like healthy 2-3 inch cuts i remove all leaf and side growth matter, i prefer soft wood cuttings the newer growth but older hard wood still roots. i'll leave only 1-2 main leaves pluss the new growth stoot, i cut the main leaves in half. this stops the transpiration process of photosynthsis and forces the plant to creat roots faster, i leave submerged in water my cutting i use a DYI clone bubbler i madeup. i take the desired cut remove all excess matter trim leaves down dip into clonex root gel and place into a slot on the bubbler, lighting is 54w inflore for mum and clones the clones are approx 12 inch below lighting. to strong of lighting or to close and a new cutting may eat itself or very least wilt. i experince different root rates on the clones some roots with in 1 wk some take 3 wks, i like to run everything at once so all stays untill last cut roots .

same clones in soil under 20w fluro to establish for 1wk

one day they'll turn into something like these :)
,

experiment with dif type and styles of cloning theres many from rockwhool and rapid rooter plus to perlite and vermiculite to stickn cut directly into soil to the bubbler way or airoclone. ive tried a few types and found the DYI bubbler and method i described gives me 100% sucess rate on all healthy cuts takes.

I got a single leaf to root once, it didn't grow at all tough just spit roots out.

I have also cloned as small as an inch cut. They are kinda cute when they are that little.

this means that a plant can be topped, and the cut off top could be used as clone?

Here are some very small ones I took a wile back.
I now use an EZ-Clone copy & no longer use a bubbler.
However, the size of the clones is the same.......

them cuts look to be 3-4 inch long proper size only thing i would wrap tape around the sides so light dosent penetrate and color the top lid i used black marker for my lid

Well........ one of them was wilted when I checked on them this morning. It looks like it was in a shadow made by another plant. I moved the cloner to get a little better light and hopefully it'll help.

some cuts wilt then after a day or 2 stand back up n/p my 3 og kush cuts just stood back up lol. as long as the stem is submerged in the water the cut should stand back up ive had this happen few time's but most if not all stand back up. in my bubbler i have 4 small air stones to oxygenate the water real good
