I usually aim about 1/6th-1/5th up from the bottom of the tip shoot(dont count any stem you see, just the tip shoot) if i wanna FIM, as it opens you should see a minimum of 4 new tops, but you'll see 6-8 new tops if you get it spot on, bit of practice & you'll nail it, Nice link from MyAssisG there too, makes it simple knowing the exact cut point.
Topping or Nipping the tip will give you just 2 tops from the prior node, whereas FIM will give you upto 8 new tops!
By rights it would help if you used a curved blade, but cutting a little 'V' is the one if you can manage it, tis difficult, but straight cutting works ok, just makes it a little harder for success!
