What is a sociological view on medical mj?

I have a 12-15 page essay thats due in a week on medical marijuana for sociology. The problem is that it has to be written through a sociological perspective rather than through a legal, financial, or medical perspective. I don't want you guys to do my homework for me or anything but does anybody have any suggestions on valid points that I could bring up in regards to medical marijuana as a social issue? I've written an essay in high school on legalization of marijuana but that was cake. I could use any source. Now I am limited to sociological journals supplied online by my school.

Since Medical MJ replaces prescription pain killers how about looking into the negative societal effects of prescription pain killer dependence? Or, the fiscal costs to society for locking up medical MJ users? Good luck with only a week.

Play up the ability of the poor to access heathcare medicines by growing them rather than paying the pharma companies to poison them with side effect infested chemical meds.

Play up the openness of being able to grow your own meds rather than allowing a single entity to control the progress and research.

It's also almost impossible to create an overdose on MJ, this means less pharma related deaths.

No need for animal testing means pro animal groups are appeased.

Herb would facilitate community level healthcare which would be more localised and would help communities more accurately.

A Byproduct of growing your own meds would be things like the creation of food from seeds and clothes etc lowering social expenditure. This would help low income families survive and prosper.

The list is endless.

When I think of the socialogical perspective on MJ today deliberate misrepentation of the facts and false demonization of MJ has shaped people's opinions on the subject negatively. From a social perspective the Fed gov't is responsible for how the average person sees cannabis, and it aint a pretty pic.

You can use medical marijuana as one of the many measures of a given society's compassion. When you consider that a majority (according to our government) of our people do not want sick people to have their medicine simply because it is illegal and have no interest in changing that, that's a good way to judge (at least in one respect) how compassionate a society is.

There are a number of other ones like the gay marriage issue, death penalty issues, torture, etc. It's all a way to judge how much a society values compassion against imposing their beliefs on others.

So you can include a few paragraphs from that perspective.

Discuss the varying meanings of marijuana. At one time it was "reefer" and something to have a moral panic and prohibition over. Now many people call it medicine, while some disagree. That battle back and forth highlights the social nature of "drugs" and "medicines".
