A single person could get by in most suburban or rural places with comfort for around that, probably own a small home. In San Fran thats not going to be much I think with rents being much higher then the rest of the country. Nice hip towns in Oregon are probably like they are in New England, around 20% more then the surrounding areas.

I think you could do okay in Astoria for that but would not be able to afford much in San Fran.

you can live on the coast for that, perhaps need some $$ to lay down on a house, but certainly could make rent, see the sights, get a medical card and lay on the beach on weekends.

Midwest, you could even own your home with that. It's getting tougher though.

thanks for the answers guys so 4000$ is good but not extraordinary and not enough to live comfortably in a town like San Fransisco.
so how much do you consider is a good salary to live very comfortable in a nice town on the west coast ?

In San Francisco you need around 100k a year to live without constant financial stress. You can survive on 4k a month with roommates.

Other towns you can get by on 50-70k but if you want to live in the bay the prices are all pretty high.

astoria, or any place west of portland/beaverton, is small town, usa. it is super cheap vs a major city. hell, portland is super cheap vs san francisco. 48k in small town, usa... no prob. oregon coast is really nice too... really nice... just no amenities. have to drive into portland, but thats a short, chill day trip. oregon is great.

Go to Census.gov to see a variety of basic stats

Or bestplaces.net

You can buy a single family home on the sw coast of Fla for less than 100K and in some cases much less than 100K and have a single family house with more than 1400 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 car garage and a swimming pool for that in a decent middle class neighborhood.

In socal a similar neighborhood, house would cost at least 5-8 times that ( more along the coast ) for example .

It's a big country. There's winners and losers and areas will reflect that. An employee of mine who has worked for me for over 2 years from Holland now feels like he's died and went to heaven living in California. Meanwhile friends of mine from England feel the same way after purchasing a 3 bedroom house in SW Fla with a swimming pool for $65,000. You couldn't get them back to England for any reason. Other friends of mine from Latin America live in Miami and NY and the same can be said there.

Be aware that winter on the Oregon coast is a very windy, wet, cold & grey experience. The beaches are beautiful but the water is never anything like warm, even in the summer.

There's a reason that Oregon settlement is predominately east of the Cascades, and that's weather.

$4K/mo would be an entirely decent salary (not great) in Astoria, depending on the benefit package.

I'm pretty sure that you'd be very financially secure if you were making 4k a month and lived on the Oregon coast.

Many of those towns(Astoria, Seaside, Lincoln City, Newport, Tillamook) rely on a dwindling tourism trade and were hit very hard by the recession. Added to the fact that depressing weather conditions and a poor economic base besides breweries and the underground pot trade make the Oregon coast a lot less attractive of a destination than say, Portland or even Eugene(haha).

Hello friend!!! I was born in Astoria, its a pretty cool place to live, but it is also pretty isolated from the rest of the state. No big stores up there, Costco, best buy ect ect...but if small town coastal living is what you want, 4 k per month should do you really well in Astoria/sea side. They are pretty medical mmj friendly and have a real nice dispensary and head shops. It does rain up there easily 3/4 of the year so outdoor growing is out of the question. Defiantly visit first and go in September/October so you can really see what the weather is like. Go sight seeing, the goonies house and the school from kindergarten cop are both historical landmarks in Astoria.

an Astorian ! cool ! hello man, thank you and you're right i need to visit Astoria and the Oregon coast first, i hope its an open minded place im not christian...
its funny you spoke of the goonies film its like that i discovered the landscape of the Oregon coast, its seems so wild and preserved !
