what/how big carbon filter do i need?

T

tyler

i am growing in a 9.2 m2 (102sqft) room.
4.2x5.5 ft of it is my grow space, doesnt have any walls, just a frame built.
2x600w, 13 3gal plants.
i dont have any air conditioning or temperature control (ventilation), only two basic fans running 24/7. temps are 90f under the lights, 80f in room.

what kind of a carbon filter do i need to eliminate some of the smell inside the room so outside of the room there is no smell at all ?

thanks in advance

If you are going to spend the $$$ to get a good fan and filter for your growing area, you should invest in some cooltube's for your lights as well, and get those 90 degree temps down in the 80's. Your plants will love you for it.

Here is the address to the cool tubes:
http://www.discount-hydro.com/productdisp.php?pid=638&navid=43
$114.95 x 2 = $229.90

Here are some Active Air carbon filters:
http://www.discount-hydro.com/productdisp.php?pid=579&navid=23
Maybe the Active Air 33 for your setup? $99.95
You would also need a flange for the filter which is an extra $11.95

And now for a fan to hook that filter too:
http://www.discount-hydro.com/productdisp.php?pid=295&navid=29
I would personally choose the Vortex fan model VOR6 because its only a small amount of $$ more, and moves WAY more air than the VOR6L
$206.95
A speed controller for these units is also available incase your Vortex is too loud, those cost $29.95

And dont forget flexible tubing:
http://www.discount-hydro.com/productdisp.php?pid=644&navid=29
25 feet of that should be enough. Also, everything i've listed has a diameter of 6 inches, therefor you would need 6" flexible ducting tube.
$27.95

And lastly, hose clamps to hold everything together:
http://www.discount-hydro.com/productdisp.php?pid=320&navid=29
$4.95 for 2 6inch clamps, just a quick estimate, i'd say you need 8 clamps.
So $4.95 x 4 = $19.80

All in all, your total comes to $626.45 without tax and shipping, and the speed controller is included in the total. Now thats alot of dough to spend in one fifteen minute sitting at the computer LOL

So you could ditch the speed controller(if noise isnt much of a problem, i've heard these vortex blowers are pretty loud), ditch the cool tubes for some less expensive air cooled hoods with 6inch flanges.

That is just my two cents, and what I will be getting by next year for my setup.

An ozone generator could possibly take care of most of your garden smells. I had purchased one a few years ago and it didnt do as good of a job as an active carbon filter does though, and my grow area then was smaller then yours.

Hope any of this is helpful!

^^^ Agree completely, but will add my own experience. I had a 1000-watt in a ~170sqft area and had pretty bad temperature problems as well. Ended up running a 4" squirrel cage to pull in cool air and blow through the light, out the other side. Exhaust was taken care of by a 8" can fan (~750cfm) and a likewise carbon filter (30"x15") vented outside the room. Temps stayed in the 78-81F range and humidity wasn't really a problem due to geography.

I would go a little larger in case you add more plants - a can50 would be good, better safe than sorry and I am 99% sure it will get rid of all the smell so you can sleep well at night. It isn't much more expensive but cleans much better than the smaller models. I have a can100 and use it to clean a 12 by 15 room with the grow space being 10 by 10 with four 1000 watt HPS and plants the size of tree's. It kills all smell. Hope this helps.

crzygirl: i really appreciate your reply however i would need a site which delivers Internationally. thanks for pointing out the items so i have an understanding how big i need to go.
deviant420: i have no way of exhausting anything in our out of the room.
tgt: the can-thing sounds nice, ive read about it on the forums before. however i think its not available worldwide.

anyway, we were actually thinking of building the scrubber ourselves, using one of the tutorials on this site. we have one already, however its definitely too small for the room and it also has a pretty weak fan in it.
so the plan is to build two scrubbers with 400cfm fans which should take care of a room thats 100sqft (9 m2) if our calculations are correct.

id love to hear more recommendations and opinions on this topic

thanks :rasta:

The scrubber/filter I have is about 20 inches long and is 6 inches in diameter(the actual area that holds the active carbon), and has a 4 inch input flange on it, and is MATCHED to a Can-Fan 165cfm fan. If im not mistaken, it is big enough to take care of a 120sq.ft. space for 6-8 months, or maybe its cubic feet.

Anywho, 2 homemade scrubbers of that size, with each their own 400cfm blower, hell that should work damn good in your grow area. Also, you do not have to blow through the filter, you could have air be sucked through the filter as well. Some fans suck better then blow, after restrictive things are attached to them that is.

^^ Well said. I would have posted this sooner... damn newbie post restrictions.

Anywho... remember you are working in CUBIC feet for intake/exhaust. Assuming you room is a standard-ish 10x10x8... you have 800 cubic feet of air to cycle. I have read that anywhere from 1-5 minutes is acceptable depending on setup. With two 400cfm fans, you are looking at being on the money to exhaust the room in a minute flat. Bonus?- you are in a good position to do Co2 if temps are steady without the fans on all during the flower 12-on side.
