What deficiency is this?

I am growing under a 400W HPS in a C13 cabinet with a Waterfarm (hydroponic) from General Hydroponics. I use 1 tsp Foxfarm Grow Big 6-4-4, 2 tsp Hygrozyme and 1 tsp pH Down per gallon of tap water: the Waterfarm holds 2 gallons. The tap water pH is 7 as it comes out of the faucet. After adding nutes/pH Down, the pH is around 5. The lamp is 45 centimeters/18 inches away from the top of the plant. Temperatures are around 28*C/80*F when the light is on.

The plant is Chronic by Serious seeds and it is about 4 weeks old. It is about 20 centimeters/8 inches tall.

What deficiency do I have on this plant?

What can I do to cure it?

Some of the pics are with the HPS on, some with it off. You can see the true nature of the deficiency in the HPS-off pictures.

are you putting 1 tsp per 2gallon of res?? or 1 tsp per gal??
If it is 1 tsp per 2 gal i think thats low for your plant which is four weeks. YOu could bump up too 1 tsp per gal, but I dont think thats the problem it looks like a ph issue almost burnt. 5 is definitely low even for hydro, I listen too MTF and slide er up to 5.8.

Something else I just noticed...you'll probably also want to use the hydro formulation of the Grow Big the next time you get some.

Also, what's your water source? Sounds like it's sketchy at best if you're having to use 5ml of PH down per gallon...if you've got clean water you should be having to add PH up to keep the PH in check.

Yeah, stop using the Ph down! I used waterfarms when I first started hydro a couple years ago. Man, I could have saved myself a boat-load of money by DIY. Anyways...your Ph is exactly like mine...Ph7. If you are using tap water, get as much as you are gunna need...let it sit out for at least 24 hours uncovered, to let the chlorine evaporate. 48 hours is better, but I've done this plenty of times with just 24 hrs. Add your nutrients, wait a few hours for it to stabilize. I'm willing to bet when you check, it's between 5.8 and 6.2

As stated by MTF-Sandman, I'll back him up on this, Ph5 is way too low for hydro. Your girls are bitching because their feet are on fire:mad: :bat: If after you add your nutes, and your Ph is still a little high, then add a few drops of Ph down. 1 tsp(5ml) per gallon, is a little much. I know the bottle says use that much, but don't! Give it like 5-10 drops, let it stabilize, then check again.

Peace

ph issues and ppm's, you should never grow hydro without a ppm meter, ever unless you are an experienced grower......

it seems to me you are using to much of the ph down locking out nutrients and some more being overabundant.........

I would flush the system out balance the ph and add a small amount of nutrients first and work your way back up. Also since you are using tap water it's harder to control ppm's and ph with tap water which is why a lot of people use bottled water or RO filtered water, much easier to control growing conditions with.

I would also try to bring temps down a little, around 75 if possible.....

Thanks, guys!

I changed the water to 1 tsp/ 5 ml per gallon/ 4 litres of Hygrozyme and FoxFarm Grow Big, no pH down. I'll let it run like that and get a pH/PPM pen in the meantime. Then, I'll start taking better measurements.

Can anyone link some primers to PPM's and their manipulation/use in growing hydro?

Mtf sandman was right on this one. Your grow big is not really for hydro. I think it evens lacks calcium and has very little magnesium. All that burn is probably calcium def.

When you chanaged the water, what water did you use,RO,distilled,or tap water?RO water or distilled water you will want to add cal-mag plus to the water with your nutrs.Calcium and alot of the heavy metals are removed from RO and Distilled water so if you are useing RO water just use the cal-mag plus with your nutrs.A PH pen and TDS meter is a MUST HAVE TOOLS for hydro. The sandman knows so if you do as he says you will be gald you did.

Here's one on LUCAS FORMULA You can ask the man himself. He will respond to almost all sensible questions.

Look at this one as well Canna Stats

Basically if your PPMs are dropping faster than your water you need to feed em more. If the PPMs are remaining steady or climbing as water is consumed, then you need to feed them less....There is no magic PPM for plants, but it really makes monitoring your plants alot easier since you can essentially see how much they're eating.

Ive grown out batches of chronic from serious seeds.....ive made seeds with chronic parents F1's and crosses.....and those plants are really really dark green.....like everyone said ph is low and they looked really fried ....like overnuted to the extreme....might account for the dark green color......result of using FF ???
no matter what get a ph/tds/ec pen....JMO
Good luck

I use straight tap water and do not let it sit out to evaporate chlorine.

I guess I'll change my nutes and get a pH and TDS meter.

The pics look like calcium deffeciency. Below 5.5 cal/mag start to get locked out my .002. Calcium can be deceptive cuz it looks so much like fert burn

It does look like calcium deficiency. Maybe magnesium deficiency, the more I research it.

In any event, I switched the nutes to Botanicare Pure Blend Pro Grow 3-1.5-4. You can follow my grows in my sig.
