What are the pro's vs cons on a 600vs1000w?

I have a room im working with, around 9x9 atleast, looking to run around 24 buckets total, and was thinking that less wattage and more Arena coverage with the 600s would be best, but a friend of mine is telling me more lumens with the 1000w, but i would rather use 3000 watts covering the whole room in 600w lamps then 3 lamps..

Advice?

look at heat and energy consumption

If you have 3 600 (1800 watts) or 3 1000 (3000) watts, that is another 2 600's in difference

You will most likely need 3 separate 120 circuits for your 3 1000, while you would only need two for 3 600

Then heat, 1 600 bulb can easily keep an uninsulated 7x7 Canadian room at about 25 c or 80f

bigger is always better 1000>600

a wise man once said....

go big or go home

oh yeah , if your gonna do something do it right, or don't do it at all

if i have any more wise proverbs ill pm them to you

oh yeah confucious say man with big light grows big buds ;)

600's put out more lumens per watt, making it easier to get to 1gpw with 600's than 1000s. They put out less heat and can be put closer to the canopy, and offer more points of light so less shadowing overall.

They do not penetrate as deeply as a 1000w bulb though, and are best (as Dog said) for plants under 3' in height. A 600w will illuminate a 3.46' X3.46' canopy with 50wpsf. A 1000w will provide the same wattage to a 4.47' X4.47 canopy, but creates more heat too.

Bulbs for 1000's are only slightly more expensive than 600s. Running a large set of 600s requires additional ballasts, hardware and bulbs, but will probably out-yield the same overall wattage of 1000's because more lumens are hitting the buds with 600's.

I'm getting a 9x4 tent with 3 600's.

Will that be good? I need to save on wattage so I thought the 600's were better than 1000's for this.

con for the 600W are that spare parts are harder to come by. I can go into any electrical suppy store and get anything for a 1000w analog ballast. I cna get absolutely nothing for a 600w from them. If i had to i could go to home depot and get a replacement 1000w hps, again no such luck with the 600w hps.

I am glad this came up, I am trying to decide on 2 1k's or 3 600's

Yep, you have 50 watts per square foot of light. With digital ballasts you'll get an extra 10% lumens on the most efficient lights we can use, 600w hps! Go find that 1gram per watt per 60 days harvest!

i have just started a crop and i am going to use a 600 mh for the veg and a 600 and 1000 hps to flower,, the 600 is using a new digital ballast that allows for use of either hps or mh bulbs,, i will have pics up on my page in a month or so. ( just started the crop a few days ago so nothin to see atm) i am growing on a 4x8 tray and i am undecided on using 2 1000 or 3 600.. lets smoke and ponder the situation

What would be better for 20 plants, 3 600's or two 1000's? I want to harvest 10 every month...

The only 600mh bulbs are conversion bulbs, which will cost you some lumens. Better to use a couple big t-5's for veg and 3 600 for flower, much more electrically efficient that way.

having done both, i like 600's when the situation and funds call for it. you will spend more, but have, IMO, better coverage.

However, it's been my experience that Lazyman's suggestion is really the key. 1000's just penetrate the canopy a lot more than 600's. let the size of your plants dictate.

In a thread I was reading recently there are a couple posts by greyskull saying things like

"my 1000w's gave me double the yield that my 600's did"

and another person saying "I started on 600's and went onto 1000's , i'll never go back".

As of today my position is if I hadn't already purchased 600's I would have went straight to 1000's. But due to my situation 600's may even be best for me so i'm going to use them ... unless of course someone comes along and buys ALL of my lighting equipment :D

It seems to me that , from the posts i've read, 600's are better ON PAPER but the 1000's are better in real world "i want more yield" situations.

This is the thread I was talking about ... the 2nd page is a must read where someone breaks out all the stats on why 600's are better and the above quotes i listed off come out as replies.

I have an 8 by 8 flower room with 3 1K vertizontals.I havent grown with 600's but can tell you if your plants are going to finish 3 ft or taller, you'd be better off with the 1K's.Then there is the expense of growing with a lower wattage lamp which makes zero sense to me.I guess the 600's are purely horticultural where 400"s and 1K are commercial.Anyway ballasts, lamps, everything about replacement with the 600's are much more than with 1K.Like I said I havent flowered with 600"s but as long as there are 1K horties I wont try anything else
