150w hps is alot of light for those little seedlings, either back it way off or get some cfls, or even a lower wattage mh bulb, alot of people use 150watts of hps lighting for finishing/flowering, seems like alot of wattage to start off with.

what your soils ph if the ph is off the plant wont grow I had this problem once using the wrong potting soil now I start in fox farm ocean forest soil and havent had a problem sence, you might also have a bad seed or a very old seed. keep that light about 14 inches from your seedling I like to start seedlings under 1 t-12 80w cool daylight bulb.

sounds to me like your tap root was getting tangled up in the soil...with its self

if you're seeing the taproot come out of the ground where the leaves should be coming out, maybe you put your seeds in backwards...

Just leave them dude. Nothing wrong, they just need time to put the root down before they come up.

10 inches is too close. i bet the soil is over 100 degrees! you are probably cooking them... either just put them on a windowsill at first, or back WAY off with the HPS... a non-contact thermometer is an invaluable tool. :)

Plants will grow slow early in their life. Roots need to develope first before anything. Give it time and you wil see above ground results. And 10 inches is a recipe for making some baked beans man. Be sure to back up that light ASAP.

I have to totally disagree with a lot of the posters, a 150 10" from the soil is not going to heat things up... If it was me, I'd have a little fan blowing over the medium and keep the 150 6-8" from the soil. IMO there is nothing wrong with blasting seedlings with a lot of light, keeps them erect, tight nodes ect.

a seedling no problem, but the soil itself is dark in color and absorbs a lot of HEAT. fan would solve it tho, necessary even... ;) :joint:

I agree with space ghost 100%,back that low wattage HID up any higher and you're gonna have one stretchy little seedling. The best thing I've found for seedlings is a simple 4 ft 2 lamp shoplight.I can grow 10-20 seedlings in 4 inch pots to little 4 inch bushes, then I hit the HIDs.150 watt doesnt put out much heat and 10 inches should be OK,you want your light as close as possible to the top of the plant when it breaks ground to avoid the unavoidable stretch that occurs.I like to leave about an inch empty of soil on top of the container so when the seedling breaks ground and stretches,I can come back and fill it in with soil to support the stem. Some people say you dont need light to bring up a seedling and you dont, but it'll be one stretchy little bitch real quick if you dont

i have a question about using lights . can you use a regular light bulb the 100 watt ones that light up everyday bed rooms ? i have an extra light but would that bulb work or are there bulbs made for that socket ?

I'd like to know how you know you got a tap root 2 days after planting the seed; did you dig up the seed? Resist the temptation to explore through the soil after planting seeds. It can take more than a week for seedlings to break through.

Regular incandescent light bulbs are not in the suitable light range for growing. You may, however, use compact fluorescent lights that fit into a normal light socket. Read through some threads in the "Micro Grow" forum for info.
