Weird... Google search results

I just did a search for a panasonic whisperfan, and the very first link is to a thread here. That's no good, IMHO. It probably doesn't help that my post is in the middle of the screen when you click the link, but still. Do we want that? Do we have a choice?

Why are we before all the retailers and such, isn't that kinda like flagging these products as "used by marijuana growers"?

I don't even remember posting that...

I'm so sick of people making stupid sarcastic jokes about people being paranoid. It was just a surprise when I searched for something in Google and up popped a post by me on these forums.

b10narybud - You're probably right, I can't imagine they get too many visits. I bet half of them are from that thread.

Does google arrange search results based on the most common link selected?

I know this is an option is most out of the box engines.

Google is too good! I mean who searches for that POS anyway? ;)

I know I don't want my handle coming up in any searches so I feel where you're coming from.

There was a thread regarding this (about a hydro site) in the growers forums...

I goggled my name and my guest book came up. Stuff does make me paranoid also. I went back and did an edit of my posts. Just to make sure I didn't give any info out that I thought to be harmful to me. I recomend everyone do this. There are some here that give their geographical region......not me anymore. I also edit pictures for finger prints and bar codes on products.....everything I can find.

You want to freak out some more? Google your (bounty29 icmag) name and then click on "repeat the search with the omitted results. Most your posts will come up. Which I think SUCKS!

just for the record, i clicked on your link and you spelt it wrong. When i clicked on the button for the properly spelled word all of the companies ect. came up for a bunch of pages. The reason is that you had the same typo in your post and search so thats the first thing that google pulled up was the same spelling, then similar/related links

Yup. I noticed that a while back. But I am sure there is very little that ICMag can do about this..still scares me a bit though.

Its googles business to know as much as possible on every public website out there. The webcrawlers and bots are diligent enough to update and cache information and pages to the point where it gets updated in their search engines. Nothings going to change much the way that works besides privitizing the public aspect of the site. Doesnt work well if the site is selling ad banners etc. to the public.

Considering everything shows up in google if you know the right search words the only way to avoid that paranoia is to leave the internet.

Don't forget that not only can google find whats out there on the net but also 'caches' it and saves it for presumably forever.

Anyone ever wonder how many hard drives google has in their central storage facility. Basically it's a snapshot of the entire web since its inception. :yoinks:

I know it's misspelled and I know that the correctly spelled version doesn't show anything. But that's not really an obvious thing, I'm sure half the people that have heard of that and do a Google search would do the same.

Oh well. As long as this screen name is kept separate from any personal information, all should be fine.

Actually the web is built on spelling. Many web sites buy domain names that are mispelled so the mispeller will end up at their intended site.
Don't even get me started on places like ebay. Spelling can make the difference between a good deal and no deal.

I know it sucks but search engines are stupid relatively speaking. They only know what you tell them.

That's exactly what I mean. Someone that accidentally misspells it winds up looking at this forum. I agree, the eBay misspelling thing is crazy though.

.. I know it sucks but search engines are stupid relatively speaking. They only know what you tell them..

Its a little bit smarter than that.

.. Google uses an algorithm called PageRank to rank web pages that match a given search string. The PageRank algorithm computes a recursive figure of merit for web pages, based on the weighted sum of the PageRanks of the pages linking to them. The PageRank thus derives from human-generated links, and correlates well with human concepts of importance. Previous keyword-based methods of ranking search results, used by many search engines that were once more popular than Google, would rank pages by how often the search terms occurred in the page, or how strongly associated the search terms were within each resulting page. In addition to PageRank, Google also uses other secret criteria for determining the ranking of pages on result lists...
