Weird ass mold (?!?) H E L P !

I'm helping a friend grow for his first time (my second time), and we've run into something I haven't ever seen in ANY plants of any kind. He's currently growing in a modified linen closet, 150 watt HPS, three fans to circulate the air within the closet (not much in the way of intake or exhaust, we're trying to build a flowering cab now -- dimensions too tiny for it's own good). This ... WEIRDNESS ... appeared on the soil in the last week and has grown wicked fast.

It is yellow, VERY textured, and it covers the soil radiating out from the stems in each of the pots, more concentrated in the middle. I pulled off some of the topsoil to keep as a sample and it smelled strongly of mushrooms (like pizza ... mmmm ... pizza). What is this stuff? From what I've read so far we REALLY need to get this closet ventilated, but we should be cool just scraping off the topsoil ... right?

Trying to attach a pic, I hope this works!

I could brighten this up or enclose some other pics if necessary -- this stuff looks freakish and wrong!

Please Help!

i cant tell what the fuck it is :biglauggh: but looks like a mushroom, a fruitbody, no mold looks like that .
more than likely its from yer air exchange bein less than optimal and humidity way too high.
yer soil should be allowed to dry up completely in between waterings,
which will prevent any fungus spores or mysellium latent in the soil to come up
and 'fruit' as you are seein..... its not a good thing.

i would shut off all fans, remove the fruitbodies and whatever 'mold' u can
easily remove from the soil and give a flush with clearex once the can drys up completely from last watering.
clearex or water+h2o2 will stunt the fungus temporarily and since its in the soil with yer roots
theres no getin rid of it without cloning and startin over,
so just fight it this run and next time buy new soil (better, like promix,as the base soil)

good luck and get FRESH AIR EXCHANGE UP and HUMIDITY DOWN

Thirteen...don't go sniffing those or the soil, you could get really sick. It could potentially lead to liver failure. Lower the humidity and get some fans in there bro...

this pertains only to black mold.

Stitch -- I'll try to get some different pics in, tends to lock up the computer so *crossing fingers* ..

Capitano -- Yeah, little out of it when I started the thread. :) While the fruiting bodies (makes me smile every time I say that) are what appears on the top, there was also a generic spiderwebby mold underneath in one of the areas about 1/4 inch below the soul, where the fruiting bodies begin. This was only common to one area and I basically told my friend, "I think we're screwed." I'll try to post a few more pics to see if that sheds any light.

Sproutco -- Although I had advised my friend to sterilize the pots (came from some 3rd parties garage), he did not do so. The soil came from WalMart, and although I'd expect that to mean SOMETHING, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't. :) Is store-brand pre-sterilized? It just sits there outside ...

I don't know how to lower the humidity in this area -- there's no way to bring in new air and take out the old. Best I can do (for the moment) is circulate it in a very thin yet tall area. We're building a cabinet that hopefully will allow us to address this problem, but this modified linen closet really has to stay closed and locked. Is there some good way of lowering the humidity in a small room that has to be closed and locked? Could I set out a dish of something that would pull the moisture out of the air?

Thanks for your help, everyone! I really appreciate this! If all goes well, additional pics follow.

Some pics ...

Some pics ...

Here we go ... that uninvited guest in the soil. I can get more pics if necessary -- I could take pictures of the babies all day. :) Not that I know what I'm saying, but it seems to flourish in the shadow of the plant ... ????

Second pic, a more zoomed in shot of a bunch of this junk I scaped off the top of the soil :

Third pic is my original one, bightened and contrast increased :

And this is the closet -- terrible spot, I know -- honest, we're building a better home for them!

damn dude get that shit in a chamber and lets see some fruits....lol
