First problem is they used a grocery store in New York City.

They should have gone to a decent bodega. I spent a week in NYC 3 blocks from where the World Trade Center Towers stood, and shopped at a bodega across the street from the hotel every day. I really enjoyed that aspect of the trip, and would definitely compare it to the London grocery experience. The rest of my experience, not so much. Whole damn time I was there it smelled like piss. No matter where I went.

Pricing was that ridiculous though. Luckily it was a work trip, so I didn't pay for anything. :D

Groceries are cheaper in California than they are in Ohio. Everything except pork.

Prime Rib Eye steaks are 4 or 5 dollars a pound cheaper. Even brand name stuff like Tropicana Orange Juice and LandOLakes butter were cheaper at the Ralph's grocery store than there are at the Giant Eagle in Ohio.

Let's not even talk about the price difference in fruits and vegetables. In Ohio a single orange is $1. California... about a dime. Artichokes?

The TV news always seems to go by the cost of real estate which is bull shit. If I have 250k for a house, that's what I am spending on a house. I won't spend more or less in Ohio or California. That's all I have so that's how much a home will cost me. Period. OK, so I get more or less for my money in different areas of the country but, it still doesn't cost me any more or less.

What is really important is how much it actually costs to live there.

I could prove beyond anyone's shadow of a doubt that it is more expensive to live in Ohio that just about any place in the world.

Couple examples..... water bill is $200 per month for 600 CF. Utility costs are about 5k per year. Property taxes on a 100k home are almost $4,000.00

Ohio city dwellers pay more for water and property tax than San Fransisco and NYC.

TV News says Cali taxes are highest but Cali does not allow local or county income taxes so with 7.25 sales tax, they are still 0.25% under Ohio because Ohio allows all counties, cities, neighborhoods, streets and kids with tree forts to charge tax. Sales Tax in my local is almost 10%. Same thing with income tax. After all the city, state, local, kids, retards, schools, jigs, white trash and spooners get their cut, it's way higher than Cali.

So, it depends on how you look at things and what point you are in at your life. I'm old so I don't spend much on clothes, furniture and kids shit. I eat, drink, poop and pee. How much does that cost in Manhattan? Less than where I live.

And, before you say, get the fuck out of there, I am trying to sell all the real estate I bought here before I knew it was such a shithole. LOL I am hoping to be out before Winter hits.

California here I come, all wrapped up in bubblegum.....

Sounds like someone pissed in your mom’s cheerio’s, that or berry’s.
Still would like to know what happened to that cat, was a damn good cat.

What’s electricity cost in Ohio? Hard to believe things cost more than California, but I see your point on the local taxes.

The real estate issue is bad in California because inventory is always low it seems. Costs 7-10 times as much to put up apartment complexes in Ca. versus the Midwest. Mostly from extra regulations and higher real estate prices. Places routinely go for higher than list price.

Are eggs really non refrigerated in England? I fear us Americans are misguided in this practice :dunno:

They aren't refrigerated in most of Asia although places like those pesky Tesco's are convincing people to do otherwise :)

agree on location although NYC is about as good as it gets for groceries from all over the world.

But I like it warm and the South east coast of Fla is tops for me..........

Eggs... not refrigerated in shops, but all our domestic fridges have egg trays.
Egg custard tarts... mostly in fridges, but some stores keep them with the pastries.

I have seen some great houses almost for free near collapsed cities. I think Detroit?
What would I do if I moved to another country though. No friends, no family, no contacts. It seems grim.

refrigeration not needed for a few days unless you wash the eggs. the shells are porous, so when you wash them you liquefy the chicken shit etc on the outside to leach through the shell. folks used to coat freshly laid eggs in melted wax/ bacon grease to preserve them w/out refrigeration.

I worked a few jobs in Cali a few times. To a large extent, Cali feeds the US with what’s grown there. Fresh produce that was probably picked the day before is cheap and plentiful.
My favorite part of living out there was the wine. Truly great small vintage wines at extremely low prices.

Europe seems to have better cheeses than the US.

Here in Boston you can't find a house for less than a million in the suburbs or city :(

Last year I was contacted by a head hunter who wanted me to work at their hospital in Boston. She sounded kind of desperate. I told her I would consider it if their hospital could help me by providing housing or housing assistance due to the costs. That was basically the end of the conversation.

That would have been cool Amynamous! Yeah the house and rent prices around here are ridiculous

Used to have neighbors that were nurses that did short term gigs all over.
Bought a nice moter home to live in while they did so, and they made out pretty well.
