Watts is watts right? Regardless of light type

If you use 250 total watts of flourecent lighting ,then switch the lighting to 250 watts of hps .The power consumption is the same for either correct? or no? I mean 250 watts of lighting is the same power consumption regardless of weather its flouro's ,hps,or mh right?

I think it has more to do with the amps it draws we have a few experts you should not have to wait long for a answer

Look @ the total amps of your light fixture then multiply that by your actual voltage coming out receptacle this will give you total watts consumed. Your lamp will produce the wattage marked but thats not what you are paying you bill on, your ballast will consume some power aswell, so this will increase the total wattage consumed. So you are paying your bill on like 260+ or so actual watts once the ballast has been figured in. Keep in mind these are not exact numbers just rough estimates used for the purpose of explaination, exact numbers would be figured by exact household voltage and amperage used by your lamp(s) and ballast. Also keep in mind, some ballast/light styles will run more efficiently meaning less power is lost producing heat.

HID ballasts get hot which uses energy.

If you are concerned about electrical useage on a 250W light, forget it


Technically there are variables and there is a difference but in reality, the difference is probably so small its not noticeable
