watering

Definitely go for a wet/dry cycle. This encourages the roots to search for water it. A drier root ball will also suck in air as it's watered and expell the stale gasses. Don't let it dry out so much that the whole rootball shrinks away from the pot though.

What are you growing in? Dry, as in no moisture, is bad. You want them at least moist or damp. AS MedShed says, oxygen is vital to root growth. In soil, coco, Rockwool etc the idea is to cycle. Every bit of water absorbed or evaporated is replaced with fresh oxygen. Every bit of water added, flushes out old nutes and bad air with fresh nutes and fresh air. It's a lovely vicious cycle.

With DWC the idea is too submerge roots in constantly oxygenated water. While a gap is maintained between pots and res levels, the bubbling throws water drops up to exposed roots keeping them damp.

Moisture and oxygen. Gotta have both.
