Watering and drainage

I'm about a month into flowering now and a couple weeks ago I was seeing a few small problems with the plants. Up until then I had been just watering in the pot until the tray underneath fills a little, since I had the problem I decided to water them in the sink to let build up in the soil drain, and they've been a lot more happy since it seems, and watering has become much more regular/predictable.

Lately though, they've become so big that's it's a bit of a nuisance to take them out of the growroom every time I want to water, they're so tall they sway as lot as they're being carried etc, and I'm always worried about an accident.

So my question is about whether or not it makes a big difference to drain every watering or just leave it to suck up the excess in the tray? Will it make much of a difference when I've only 4-6 weeks to go?

I Leave my water in the saucers for the plants to suck up all the time when they get big. I water with a measuring cup by hand so its pretty easy to figure out what they need and give em just enough. Late in flower I often leave a half inch in the saucers on purpose.
