water retention ammendment

Does anyone know of an ammendment which will improve water retention for established plantings?

Manure, top dress?

Wouldn't it be tough to top dress fertz with a layer of mulch on top? Should've mixt in something into the soil before planting. I might try this Mel's square foot stuff. Its real thick and I think its got vermiculite

Eh, I just scrape it back if needed. A bit of vermiculite will help, especially if you can still scratch some into the soil.
