Water cooled hood

Hello fellow stoners,

As I love to make many things myself (and I am dooing wery good until i get stoned :chin: ) I was thinking if I would be able to make a water cooled hood for my 400w hps.. so if anyone has one could you please take some photos of your reflecor? And some questions- is the cooling like a cooltube, but there is no fans pulling the air trough but just a 2 layers of glass around the lamp (or the lamp is somekinda hermeticly swimming in water :joint: ) and then there is two tubes coming in and out of the glass then there is a pump wich circulates the water trough big heatsink radiators? I hope I got it right. so is the tubes closed in the both sides so heat spreads not to air trough the openings but just the water? and thats all i wanted to ask.. :jump:  :smoweed:

Just go air cooled...water cooled lights are a royal PITA and reduce the effective light that reaches you plants by a substantial amount - which you don't want if you're only running a 400w.

ok then.. can i get a cooltube reflector and use it like this?? cooltube(air enters at one of the openings)-->duct fan(push the air)--->silencer--->carbon filter? will it work and pushing the air trough filter will stop the smells??

Yes if you push the air through a carbon scrubber, it will eliminate any and all odors. How many CFM fan do you plan on purchasing for your 400 watt light?

You can run it like that, but make sure that the light is sealed very well. I really doubt that you'll need a silencer for a smaller fan which is what I assume you're gonna be using.

fan i have is 160m3 per hour... sounds like a jet so i think i will need a silencer..

If my math is correct that's only a 95 cfm fan...it should be virtually silent after being hooked up to the ducting. I run an 8" elicent (636cfm) with non-insulated flex ducting and you can't even hear the fan...just the sound of the air.

dont think that it is so small cfm... i just used my computers converter from cubic meters to cubic feets and it showed me that 160m3/h is 5650cfm

Pull the air through the scrubber, don't push - unless it is designed to have air being pushed through the charcoal. It will be way more effective if odors are being sucked through the charcoal area rather than pushing them through - it is a lot easier on teh carbon housing as well...

I think you may have forgotten to convert it back to minutes from hours :D

5650cfh/60 = 94.17cfm

I'm guessing it's a european made 4" centrifugal fan (as opposed to the shitty duct booster fan)? If so, it'll be fine for air cooling that light. The general rule of thumb is 200cfm per 1K, so running a 400 with a 95cfm should do the trick.

:yoinks: $750 for a 400w! I think it'd probably be a shit load cheaper to just buy a good air cooled hood and a decent 6" inline.
