Crazy. Out here on the American West Coast a lot of the big grows that get busted are Chinese gangs. Some of them trick Chinese immigrants by telling them they're working on a legal grow. The slavery part adds a fucked up dimension to this kid's story. Who needs a timer when you can buy a slave to turn the lights on and off. With his experience it seems like someone around here could hire him for a decent wage. It's a good thing some of the growers around here aren't burned and beaten when they fuck up and kill their plants..

I heard of one..got raided for a rotting smell...wat had happened was one of the guys inside had died..but because the rest couldn't get out or despose of the body they kept working around him...saw another one wer theyd just been pileing up chicken bones an rubish to one side...ther wer all maggots all over it and god knows wat else..looked like the floor was moving.

I noticed that the story doesn't actually say when it supposedly happened. The author interjects modern factoids throughout to give the impression that it is a brand new story, but could have been (if it's even true) from 1975.

There have been Vietnamese slave-growers in the UK since at least the early 90's - if my memory serves me right - I heard about a group of them that came over via Canada years ago - and set up big grows in the UK -

Always baffled me that they do huge grows for “” swag”” ,, cut down early,,,damp flowers,
No pride in there work just £££££££,,,,,,
When an extra week ,better varieties and dry for at least a week would make the end product better but it’s all about the “” bread”” and a very quick turn over,,,

I noticed as I scrolled down the page they had other 'slave stories', different Asian people who had been forced to come to the UK against their will. The reason was to draw a connection with the group of Vietnamese who were found suffocated in the truck recently. I had questions about the story, it was obvious it had happened at least a couple years ago because he's 18 when the writer interviewed him and he was a minor when he was kidnapped. There's enough specific details that it seems true but there's also gaps that make me question parts of it.

I did a quick search, the oldest article I found was from 2015 but that was a 'wrap up' type story so it happened before that, maybe a few years. I was beginning to think this was 'old news' that gets recycled every time the press needs to demonize cannabis growers or slavers, especially because there's a rash of 'concerned people' type documents that contain lurid accounts but little substance. Then I found this one:

This is current, October of 2019, so it's still happening. I noticed this is a Vietnamese newspaper so I thought it'd be a good source to check. Found this from a year ago:

In this one they're sentencing an 18 year old kid to 2 years in prison for growing '$281,000 worth of cannabis'. The kid claims he was brought there as a slave and there was somebody else working there when he arrived who was beaten for fucking up. The article also states

'Last month 16 Vietnamese nationals had been jailed in the U.K. for between eight months and 7.35 years for running illegal cannabis farms worth $1.2 million in Lancashire.'

It seems like when they catch them as minors they're cute little exploited kids, when they turn 18 they turn into evil exploitative criminals. Along with the 260 plants (260 plants=$281,000?) they found a cell phone and 40 pounds. Money, not dope..
