Video Link Critique

I know the idea behind the video links thread is a reasonable one, but I think it is a little flawed...

To collect video links in one thread seems to make sense, but the trouble is, threads are based on topic. Video in general is too large of a topic to facilitate a good discussion, considering how some are of a serious nature, while others are posted simply for a laugh.

When collected in one thread, there is no continuity of discussion, as members are constantly adding new videos and introducing new topics for discussion.

By allowing individual threads to focus on a given video, a genuine dedicated discussion can take place, which is the only way knowledge can truly be shared.

Just a thought...

For this rule to work, there needs to be a line drawn:

Is the link just being showed for entertainment, and that is *it*?
Or is it being used to prop up an idea?

Well with the Pineapple Express thread they locked the first one and said put it in the link sticky but if you want to start a thread to talk about the movie thats fine. I just don't see how that makes sense either.

I got no problem drawing a line.........when I wanna watch you tube videos,I go to you tube,sounds simple rite?But all you guy's think that people come to ICMag to get links to you tube to watch videos.Funny how people are different,when I drink scotch I drink scotch,when I drink water,I drink water...never the two together!!

Weren't you complaining a week or so ago about how you didn't like videos on ICmag because you internet connection was too slow to watch video files?

Not to mention, this is the Tokers Den, a forum for off-topic discussion. It's not like any of this is taking place in the Grower's forums. I agree that information in those forums ought to concern weed and weed alone, but the Tokers Den seems tailor-made for this type of conversation...

More importantly, no one is forcing you to click an external link...

I'm really not seeing the point of sequestering links to movies in 1 thread.

What it seems like the mods are trying to do is stop the endless torrent of threads posting videos for the sake of the video.

While trying to kill that problem they've opened up a new one - the one of closing certain threads pertaining to *ideas* to be discussed just because there was a movie link in it somewhere, or because the movie was used as a foundation for discussion.

Am I the only one that thinks this? I dunno. Maybe I didn't gather the whole point of this new rule, because I haven't looked at that sticky yet. But that's my take on it

this is Gypsy's house, if he tells you to take your shoes off at the door you do it, if he provides you a place for youtube videos you put them there.

Somehow having individual threads containing video links burns up extra bandwidth, something he pays for on a monthly basis to the provider he uses.

I would say the site is more like a restaurant than someones home. Sure he owns the place and you can do and cook whatever you want at that restaurant but if people don't like what you're cooking or costumer service they aren't going to complain or not comeback. This is why the chef (gypsy) needs to listen to his customer's (us) when constructive criticism is warranted and I believe that's the case here.
