Vertically hung bare bulbs..safety

I like the idea of the vertically hung bulbs with no reflectors. Ive seen pics of some wicked grows using this method. It seems like it would be a good choice when growing large trees. Plus, the cost of the reflector is saved. Can anyone comment on the safety of this type of setup?

it seems to me a bare bulb just hanging, could really present a fire hazard, if something were to accidentally hit the bulb when you're not around, that could be bad. i would only do this with a cool tube, that way if something did get too close atleast you have an extra layer of protection around the bulb, not to mention the cooling aspects of it.

A hanging bulb is cooler than one under a hood I know cos I've burned myself on both but I also know reflectors trap heat making he bulb hotter, vert is cooler as the hot air just rises away from the bulb instead of being trapped or reflected. If there's a fan under the vertical bulb they don't even burn just very hot.

if you've got things that are able to fall onto your bulb you may want rethink your design, same advice goes for horizontal growing too ;)

Basically there's no difference safety wise at all apart from eye damage from MH bulbs, you do get a lot more direct light shining in your eyes.

Vertical w Cool tubes... works great + does add a layer of protection. Bottom line is that some are less careful than others & have a higher chance of bumping the bulb or splashing something on it. If it gets wet while hot, the bulb will pop & glass everywhere. Potentially less damaging is touching it bare & burning oneself. Accidents happen & a Cool tube will offer a layer of protection... I always rub up against the CT w tinkering w the plants. Peace.

I've never run bulbs that way but make sure you get the bulbs made for vertical hanging. Also make sure not to splash water on them (foliar feeding) or they could explode.
Yay!
