I would like to know is there anyone using vertical lighting with there coca grow? If so I would like to know the best to arrange say 20 plants with 3-1000watt hps, space is not an issue here...Please all input would be appreciated....
vertical lighting is ideal to be used with a tree style grow, when it comes to a see of green, then you are better off using traditional horizontal lighting. so if you are going for trees then vertical is interesting. it's not the medium that decides the lighting, more the plant numbers and length of veg phase.
Check out some vert grows by a guy named Heath Robinson. He has put together d few vert grows...but I don't think they're on this site. You could probably google his name and get some links to his grow journals.
You don't need to grow large plants to use vertical lighting. I get excellent results in a 400W vert setup, flowering the girls at 12". Some even smaller to fill any mt spaces.
I know people associate vertical lighting with kfb style growing, but I think I recall reading one of Bluehaze's thread and he does vertical lighting with his coca grows. He grows like mini trees and I think veg for like two weeks. Bluehaze if you are out there please chime in. I just want to know the best way to set up my plants and lights.....
I guess you have the space. Since you working with 20 and so plants and 3 1000 watts light i would surround 7 plant per light. Hand feed and rotate them daily. I would veg 3 week depending on the strain and aim for 4 to 5 oz per plant which is very easy in coir. Anything i can help with ask? I'll be around.
Thanks all for your replYs. hey bluehaze would I arrange my plants in a circle surrounding the light. also I am trying to obtain yields similar to yours per plant, would that be possible with the amount of lighting I have?
Yes a circle around the bulb. Try to not let them touch each other but not to far from the light. My goal is 1gram per light. Everything is possible. I personally like hand feeding every day. I feel i have more control and i get to inspect them individually.
I used to rotate my plants in my circle vertical light setup. I found that you get even light that way...but I have found I get better yields by not rotating the plants. The branches in the back will grow towards the light enough to yield nice...but the ones that face the light throughout flowering are really nice. I try to position the plant so the most branches are facing the light directly. You can even train your plant a bit to allow the branches in the back to get closer to the light.
If you don't run perpetual( which I do), you can train the plants while vegging in the vert setup. Even use a chicken wire screen or something similar to train the plant to have the majority of bud sites facing the light before the 12/12 switch.
I am running a small vert setup. About 4x4' area...with a bare 400hps with a fan underneath the bulb. I place the plants in a circle around the light. If I veg the plants to about 14" or so, I get about 2.5oz per plant. Strain dependant of course.
The one thing I really like about a vert setup, is you don't have to trim the shit outta the bottom of your plant, cause the lower stuff still gets lots of light....which in turn makes it easier to trim with lower buds worth smoking. On the downside....less trim for the hashpile.
I am in the middle of redoing the vert area...as I want to put up shelves around the 4 x 4 ....and put in smaller plants in greater numbers. I can only fit about 5 sometimes 6 14" plants in a circle...to allow room for stretch....but I figure I can do about 16 8" plants around the outside.
A 600 or 1000 would be more ideal...but I gotta live with what I got at this point.
Damn, my inabilty to get online caused me to arrive late for the vertical party....
I would use what I had to use also....but I found a 400 just was not suitable for my style....I use a 1k and don't wanna change...hard to go back to a 400 after a 1K bloomshow....
I prune lower growth in my vert grows.....I also top and train....
In my show the lower growth is in the dead spot...I like the foliage in the "meat" of the light pattern.....
Lastly....400's are much shorter than 1K's.....I can cover taller plants more with a 1K....
A 400W is better than nothing....no shame at all in growing your own shit.....fuck these guys
I followed Prawn Connery's layout....at Planet Ganja
Prawn's garden got me to try a vert setup as well. I still have one horizontal setup, and one vert. I'm still deciding which I like better. I am beginning to feel that you need at least a 600 in vert...and much better results can be achieved with 2 or more stacked.
