venting out of a chimney

hi
this is my first post but me and my hubby have been on this site and og (when there was one) reading for some time. Just have a couple of quick questions. i just moved into a new house and am looking for a place to vent. my flower room is set up next to the chimney and i was thinking of using that but i cant afford a carbon scrubber at this time.

my first question is if i were to vent out of the chimney without one would the odor be detectable from street level? kinda risky but its getting damn hot down there.

also i am using a 265cfm dayton blower (with 1 1000watt light) would it be possible to connect this kind of fan to a carbon scrubber using an intake adapter? the reason i am asking is that i have heard squirrel cage fans dont pull hard enough to be set up this way.

any help would be greatly appeciated thank you.

I would think so.

Make one. There are several threads here on DIY Scrubbers that cost around $20-$30.

Also, you might want to get some Ona bars and place them in the ducting...it does help.

Good luck

alrighty, thank you for the imput, but is my fan strong enough to pull through a carbon scrubber... I was reading a DIY on making one.. and thats simple enough and doable. so am i going to need a new fan?
also thanks for the info on the ONA BARS i hadnt even thought of that.

Hey PB
I vent out of a chimney.
I cant rely on draw bacause of the climate,
so I use iinline fans on the hoods, and one additional exhaust fan on the back side of a scrubber.

Came home one cold winter day and the smell of weed was everywhere :cuss:

The scrubber is a must for me.
Do a search on the "Krypto carbon scrubber". It's cheap and it works great for a first air scrubber.

Peace,

I vent my flowering cab (~2'6" x 3' wardrobe w/ 400W HPs) straight up an otherwise disused chimney with no carbon filter and neither I nor my other half have ever noticed any detectible odour from the plants at ground level anywhere near our house. It should however be noted that we live on almost the highest point for miles, and we're less than a mile from the sea, so we've always got some sort of breeze.

I'd suggest that it might work, but that it does depend very much on your particular situation.

Ahhhhhh, cold air sinks, doesn't it......

I was sitting here reading this and thinking, gee, what a great idea as wood burning chimneys are coated with carbon. But, I think as Teadaemon noted, it's going to depend on your particular situation if this will work out or not.

Hi all thanks for the responses :) well first off, It's is unbareably hot and very very humid here where i live, just to clear that up, and in the winters they are very very cold winters lol no medium here lol

right now in my basement with the lights off they come on 5 pm to 5 am the temperature down there is 79.6 and the humidity is 68 %.

Now we are taking the advice to get the supplies to build a carbon scrubber.
Can someone answer the question about my blower issues.

Is a 265 cfm fan strong enough to pull it through the scrubber or should we invest in a 465 cfm ?

I really appreciate all the help and tips! you all are awesome!

The 265 will work fine as long as you don't have alot of ducting between the fan and the scrubber....but an inline would work alot better, plus they're alot quieter. If you're thinking about buying a new fan, go with a 6" inline instead of a 465cfm dayton. It's only a few bucks more and well worth it.

Here's a pic of a scubber I designed for a 6" inline if it helps any...

6"IDx8"ODx36"L...took right at 12lbs of carbon to fill.

well, we are definately taking the advice and getting a better fan inline or whatnot, thats more of hubby's decision. lol
You all have been extremely helpful I appreciate it :)
I would post some pics of our last grow.... but am terrified of doing so lol

Also so you all know, at the mo we are venting to our sewer line, but found another hole in floor where it comes back up into the room. (Damn older houses) I guess its an overflow for the sewer, so i am told. Our old house we vented to sewer and it worked out great, no smell, no High temps and humidity, but the new house is obviously not beeing nice to us lol so we need to figure out what to do now.
Just a little insight.

alrighty... so i guess our problems arent as bad as we thought... we picked up a dehumidifier for the room and the temp and humidity has dropped significantly, also we are going to get a new fan like advised above and i think we arent even going to have to go through the chimney for venting. looks like things are looking up :)

thanks all for your responses.
Will keep you posted :)

I vented throught the chimney before my spouse kicked me out of my house. There was occasionally enough smell to tell outside. With a good working scrubber, I have stopped venting outside, it is just an extra hazard.

Think of small scrubbers as a filter/carbon sandwich, easy to make for 20 bucks and a trip to wallyworld. The issue to solve is to match the thickness with the power pull of the fan, a small scrubber can do fine if the air is passing through. I make mine with scissors and tape, a couple net pots, vent filters, and carbon and they work fine.My thinking on telling you this was that you can use the fan you have, or a lot of fans anyway to make what you need. Happy buds.

really... hmmmm well i will have to ponder that... spending less money is always a good thing! I myself DO NOT want to vent out of the home. Call it paranoia or what not but i do NOT want to take any risks what so ever. our last harvest we vented to sewer and the smell was hardly there. only time you smelt anything was if you opened the basement door. so i want to keep it like that.thanks HAPS :)
uh sorry to hear about your wife kicking you out! that bites.... she obviously knew you were growing so it couldnt have been that. lol and my hubby is the grower
( greenthumb for which i dont have! lol) i am more of the info getter! although he does alot of reading here and what not.
I have to say this is a great site to find all our answers. this grow now is giving us alot of stress unlike the last two grows. but hopefully we can get it under control now.
thanks :) HAGD!

Just make sure when you vent it out the chimney that you don't have any light leaks, or the neighborhood will know come night time. Use a right angle if you have this problem.
