Ventilation

Hi guys , i nees your help im investing in a 240x240x200 tent , i know its a big one . And my question is how big should my ventilation be ? I was thinking an 8in exhaust with carbon with speed control.
Then one 6inch intake with speed control.
What do you guys think ?i will be using to start with two fc80000 mars hydro leds . Do you think this enough ventilation? I will have fans inside
I decide on the 6inch in take because the 8inch has to deal with carbon filter. Let me know you thought guys .
Also im having trouble finding an eight in so any ideas ? Maybe two 6inch exhaust with carbon filter also with speed control and two 4 in intake with soeed control. 🤘🙏

Seems like the right forum. Don't know why people aren't giving their ideas. Maybe too much math involved?

Is this a stealth operation? You're running roughly 100 cubic feet. If it's stealth, get the biggest fan you can and run it as slow as needed. They really start getting loud the faster you run em.

A 6" infinity is rated at 410cfm. Filters will bring that down a bit, but at full tilt you can exchange the air in your room in 20 seconds.... but it will be loud. 8" is 807cfm... so double that of a 6", which means you can get the same exchange but way less noise.

I have no idea what the calculations vs. lights are when trying to keep the tent cool, but also deal with humidity. You don't wanna run it too dry, but also not too hot..soooo it means more complexity.

Thanks for the reply , finally 😁my grow is not stealth as such , i am allowed to grow legally, but noise is noise and the less the better . I was looking at the mars hydro fan kits but could only find up to 6inch , do they do an 8inch or do you have a recommendation that ships all over the world? .
I don’t particularly want to be running the 6inch at full speed all the time so the 8inch does sound better .
Heres a question for you/ anyone else , if i was to have a 6inch and a 4inch both with carbon filters would i be able to play around with the speed settings and have the air being exchanged enough whilst the fans aren’t running at full speed ? Or would just the fact that ive now got two fans the noise will be even more ?

Get acoustic ducting, like Phonic Trap.

Also get a fan speed controller so you can reduce fan speed. You need one that doesnt hum as it turns the motor speed down. They are bulky and weigh a couple of kilos, not the plug in timer looking ones.

You can wrap noisy ducting in different density duvets/foams/rubber/bitumen acoustic dampening sheets/carpet underlay.

The noise comes from fan vibrations and the air moving. If you can increase the area through which a fixed volume of air moves it will be quieter.

Like Tomatoesonly said generally the larger the fan size the quieter it will be moving a fixed amount of air.

Good luck reducing the noise/vibration

Hey , thanks for the info . The fans im getting have speed controllers built in . So here is another question, again i know 😉, so if i was to build a wooden box with sound proof foam on the inside then by put my fan in there would help with the sound im betting but would that come with anything that could make it dangerous im mainly think heat inside the box with the fan , 🧐 a lot to think about , thanks for the help everyone who has ls contributed so yeah thanks 🤘🙏

I upgraded from a Ø150 to a Ø200 and it's the best move I ever made for the grow room. I have it on speed 2 of 4 and it's ample. Far more flow than my Ø150 at full speed and sooo much quieter :)
Get the bigger one, no question!
I have almost no sound from the fan motor itself, mainly the sound of the air moving, which is why the hole needs to be big as possible
There are 3 other grow tents in the same area that this extractor services with the biggest being 1200x1200x2000

Thanks for the reply, and great looking room . What lights are they ? What has made you decide to change to new lights ? Also whats the wattage and average yield with a room like that ? I only ask cos ive got a mars hydro 240x240x200 tent and all the fans coming and other kit . So really just any suggestions on growing in bigger spaces really. Thanks bud and sorry for the bombardment of questions. Peaces bro 🤘🙏🙏🙏

The room or tent has to have air movement in every square inch of the growing area. The only way a plant can move nutrients and water from the roots to the leaves is by transpiration. The only way transpiration can happen is by the wind. If the air is not moving then the nutrients aren't either. A good sign there's not enough air movement is leaf bronzing on flowering fan leaves.

Another very important part of room ventilation is that the water you bring into your grow has to leave the grow area or it will become too humidity dense. If you don't return the air often enough you may have problems with mold in the house ac ducts or building duct system,. I use a high-velocity fan to exchange the air often day and night. The dry air going in flushes out the old wet air and refreshes it.

The best way I know to check your ventilation system in your grow is by hanging strings in the grow area. As long as they are moving the air is too. I can also check the velocity of the wind by the intensity of the string moving in the wind. .I hang strings in every grow from seed to flowers. 😎

I had ventilators with build in speed controll that started to hum when turned down. With a step down transformator it was less noise. Also u can connect the ventilator to the end of the ducting to produce less noise. So the ventilator is sitting on top of the tent and is connected to the filter in the tent.
I'm not good remembering all that rules of thumb but iirc 5-10 min for a totall air exchange is what u are looking for.

Ventilation 101

Your tent sounds fantastic!
I never really worked out wattage and yield. I just like to grow :)
I went to LED's because the old school lights are too hot for my climate, especially when coupled with the high humidity.
The end lights are Spider Farmer SP2000's I think with Samsung LED's etc and the middle light is a cheap Aglex M240 off Amazon I use as a filler and for the cabbage phase
My favorite light is a Hyphotonflux HPF4000 I got off Amazon. I wanted to get some Mars lights (not the "E" version, the standard ones with the Samsung LED's) but they're hard to get here in New Zealand
Edited: Aglex M240
