Vent hole Question??

G

Where is the best place to cut a 6 inch hole for my exhaust?

I was thinking about the ceiling, but repair after would be more difficult. The ceiling has that bumpy stuff that would be tough to repair.

I was also thinking about running it into the wall close to the top because patching the dry wall and repainting wouldn’t be a problem, the down side to this is the drywall for the other side of the wall is so close it will cause resistance and the air wont flow properly.

So

What do you do? What should I do?

Run your exhaust into the attic. Here's what you do if you need to do a repair(& what I've done):

Save the round piece of sheet rock that you cut out. When you go to repair the ceiling white glue a strip of wood across the inside of the hole, on the back of the sheet rock. C clamp it & let dry over night. Next, wood screw & glue the the piece of dry wall you saved to the wood you glued......let dry. Next, use premixed joint compound to fill all the gaps & screw holes. This will take several applications as this stuff tends to shrink when it drys. When everything is smoothed over with your large putty knife & dry, you can spray on texturizing and blend everything together. Let dry & paint.
It's a several day project but if you're working in say a closet, no one will ever notice.

Gro save the piece like B said , but if you use hot mud it can be done in a few hours. They have it at Homedepot or any other hardware store. It comes in a white bag with blue and red writing. sorry I can't remeber the name of it right now but it comes in 45 minute or 90 minute dry times. You will also have to buy a small acoustic ceiling repair kit, also sold at any hardware store. it might take a few tries to make it look good if you have never done it before, but trust me it can be done in 1 day.

Don't even bother with the glue just screw a piece of wood on the top and screw your piece from the ceiling to it.

I know this because this is what I do for a living.

Oh yeah you will have to use joint compound tape on the seams. The paper stuf it only costs a dollar or two for a roll.

Me personally I would just tape( and I mean tape over the entire hole) it and mud over that. But im a cheap skate=)

Sometimes bein a cheapskate just makes things harder...The aforementioned saving of the sheetrock makes your life so much easier. Patching over a 6 or 8 inch diameter hole without sheetrock is a exercise in futility unless you have been mudding walls for years, and even then it's challenging...
