A friend and I did side by sides and came to the conclusion that if you put a small plant into a large pot and are very careful not to overwater and suffocate the roots there is not difference from potting up progressively. Personally I would rather just pot them up progressively because I find its more work for me to water each plant perfectly than it is to transplant
i used to throw rooted cuts straight into 3-5gal pots but have seen a much quicker start to veg growth by starting with solo cups. just 4-7 days a couple dry outs in coco.
no more initial stall while they get their feet in a pot for me.
Every plant I have started in bigger containers have always grew faster then ones that were started in smaller containers I figured it had to do with unrestricted root growth. This is of course is just my observation and by no means scientific.
ok from what i understand.. the bigger the pot.. the more time it takes for the plants roots to teach the bottom.. once the roots reach the botttom.. ull start to see ur plant grow above the soil . so using a smaller pot ull get faster growth above soil.. at first.. but every transplant u do it will stunt. a little while the roots get into the new soil.. so i figure.. when im going to veg plants for trees that end up at around 4-5 feet at harvest.. i go from my dome little squares 1in by 1in by 1and half inch square of promix.. into solo cups.. into 1 or 2 gallons.. for veg.. and then depending use 3-5 gal for flower.. ive noticed that going much bigger for the size plants im doin its a waste of soil .
Having gone from putting a plant in a 1 gallon container into a 15 gallon container for the past couple years, and now going from the 1 gal, to 3 gal, to 15 gal, I can say the progressive way seems better, at least in my experience.
It is really easy to over-water going from 1 gal to 15, so it takes the plants a lot longer to dry out and get going again. I also feel like the roots just run for the bottom of the pot and circle up when I do this. I definitely have more roots toward the top 3rd of the container going from the 3 gallon this time.
most strains here go from 1 gal --> 5 gal --> 10 or 15 gal
my most vigorous strain grows faster when overpotted with light watering around the edges (magilla's mextiza cut. easily handles rooted clone or 6" pot to a 10-15 gal) and it doesn't wait til the roots hit the walls/bottom of the pot to explode.
I take a rooted clone, and put it into a beer cup. It stays there for a week or two, and then I put them into there final 3 gallon pots.
I use to go from clone, to beer cup, to 1 gallon, to 3 gallon.
I can't tell that there is any difference. I have yet to have a problem over watering either.
There is this super cool, little known, water gauging tool that only the elite are privy to. It's called your finger. You stick it in the soil, and if it is dry you water.
Fucking Amazing!
