Vegging Golden Tiger

Hey guys, I'm currently vegging 2 (it's all I have room for) of your GT's and in reading the description of these genetics, it states, "very short vegetative time, without need of topping." My question is, at what height do I flower these seedlings in order to achieve a plant in and around a height of 1m ?

Cheers,
Fiskars

i grow outdoors mate so cant help there but ive read elsewhere restrictive potting on the GT will help control height
shoot Dubi a PM mate

I'll share my experience ... I germinated 3 GT seeds (indoors of course) in early August. I let them veg approximately 3 weeks and switched them to 12/12 (after a week of 14/10) in the second week of September. I did not top any of the plants but I did aggressively supercrop all plants to try to maintain a fairly even canopy among 5 different strains. I took clones and started mothers/fathers of each plant.

It took 3 weeks of 12/12 before they showed sex - the other 4 strains had shown at least a week and as much as 2 weeks before the GT's. I ended up with 2 girls and they were probably between 10 and 14 inches from coco to top before the stretch started. Once flower clusters started forming they reached for the sky (or lights in my case) and I had to supercrop frequently to slow them down. For about a 3 week period if I let them grow unpinched they would pick up at least 1 to 2 inches per night.

I am at about 6 weeks since what I consider the start of flower (definite signs of sex under 12/12) and the tops have slowed their upward march down to probably a couple of inches per week. I should be able to finish both girls at a safe distance under the lights without burning them but it took a lot of babysitting and training to keep them in control. They are about 4 feet now and will probably finish at 5 feet.

So if you want to try to keep your plants under 4 feet I would suggest that you let the seed plants stay in veg and take clones from the seed plants and put them into 12/12 within a week of rooting. Based on my experience that is the only way you are going to be able to slow them down and keep them that short. Mine took 8 weeks from seed to show sex (regardless of photo period) and at that point they were pushing 2 feet and ready to start really stretching. If you can start some mature clones that are a few inches tall then you might have a chance to restrain them because they should start budding fairly quickly under 12/12.

I am going to pull an impressive yield off my 2 girls but they are going to be some high maintenance bitches the last few weeks of their lives. I am much more looking forward to the second run of clones so I can get a better idea of how my phenos will perform in my ideal environment.

Good luck with your grow. If you don't have room to take clones then flip them to 12/12 soon because they will grow and grow and grow ... but the yield and smoke should be fantastic.

It's not easy to grow tropical sativa hybrids indoors from seed, especially if you grow them along fast flowering indica hybrids .... a SCROG horizontal grow is a great way to control their size and get a very nice yield from seed. But of course, as Peacefrog commented, it's easier to grow them from clone. They mature faster and they dont stretch too much.

Check my VietBlackThai grow.

Follow Frogg and Dubi's advice to clone.

Use scrog, similar day/night temps (small temperature variations), small-ish planters, any method you can to keep from shading lower portions of the plant, and blueish white lights.

yeah, thanks, have heard the same, but wondered if you knew more.

since, ive been to the tropics and saying the light is mainly blue white, well, no.

the closest i have gotten to the same kinda light (to the eye)

was with 600w hps, (bit extra blue) 400w mh with 3000k t5 (95w) sidelighting.

looked pretty similar.

noon in the tropics, feels similar like putting your head directly under a 600w hps (maybe 5 inches at most from the bulb)

but the heat and feel is more intense in the tropics (vietnam august, noon, 15 minutes in the sun with no hat and i was running for a shower and some bottled water :) (and im the sorta guy thats just fine with being 6 hours at the beach in more temperate climes (even in huge rare heatwaves) :))

not much the intensity mate but the spectrum of light at the equator :gday:

The sun is approx 6,500K, the rest of a clear sky @ noon approx 10,000K.

Old info: red/weakening light tends to stretch plants, while more blue/stronger light does the opposite.

Own experience: strong, diffused (more vertically homogeneous), 6500K light and more similar day/night temps have shortened and bushy'ed up all kinds of plants. Recently my Brugmansia has more nodes and leaves in its last 5 inches of growth than it's previous 24 inches. It went from big temp swings and heat radiance from summer sun/weather to a steady 64F and comparatively no infrared from 6500K CFL's.

Every time I switch from my cfl's to my halide I get tons of stretch. Even when it's in he middle of a large room where there's no noticable temp swing.... Only thing I can come up with is: point source lighting vs diffused, and I can always feel more IR from the halide. The halide is 4000K, too. Ymmv....

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess I should get them into flowering asap and may try super cropping or lst to control their height. Never tried it before but it doesn't look too difficult. Here's some pics.

I thought my calendar fell into pumpkin soup when I went back to INdo- China and reread the flowering time correctly... Ive got some nice 12 week old old buddhe sitting around now. Can you say matchstick!

It wasn't a clone and it was in a 5 gallon air pot. She drank the pot dry every 3 days.

Cheers,
Fiskars

every three days is tough, micro nutrients have to be exact, and you better not let them go untopped off for more then 4 days or you'll see canibal leaf necrosis

Yeah, I hear you on the flowering time. I realized 8 weeks into flowering that I had a small light leak. The front of the plant (facing the light leak) was revegging and the rear of the plant (shielded by the thickness of the plant) kept flowering. I don't know if you can recognize by the photo but the lower rear buds were much larger than the upper front buds, if you understand what I'm trying to say.
A very definitive Thai scent.

Cheers,
Fiskars
