Variispeed fan controller

Im looking at this fan controller and it mentions that it will cause a slight hum, does anyone have experince of one of these cheap controllers?

What i want to know is does the hum come from the fan or the controller (i assume the fan) and also how loud is it?

My fan is in the attic above my grow room so if its only a minor hum i probaly wont hear it

My fan is a 6 inch systemair rvk (high power model)

Why bother with it? You can get a pretty good speed controller like this one that are probably made in a chinese factory where they put MANY different brand names on the same controller.

Because it doesn't cause hum with my fans. Vortex and Hydrofarm.

I get a hum using those Granger, and I use Vortex fans.

Well you could go with this. My speed controller fan combo doesn't hum, so that's all I can speak about. If you try to run that kind of controller at less than 50%, I'm not sure what happens. 50% is about the limit. It might hum like a bitch. Don't know. -granger

I use the one Granger2 mentions. I haven't noticed any hum, has worked really well so far. I've had it on all levels and haven't heard a thing. Mine is in my grow so I don't really notice it. I'll have a listen tomorrow and I let you know. I used a variac on my old Marshall tube amp for years, it basically is like a power sponge. When it hummed I had the capacitors replaced, could be the same with these little ones. Bad batch of filter caps or just cheap ones.? I'm not an electrician just a guess.
