Vaporizor cloner?

 Just wonderin, I got to looking at a cheapo vaporizor (Vicks room vaporizor under $10 - K-Mart). The vapor head and assembly is self-contained and just sits on top and down into the chintzy plastic reservoir. Would be easy to conjure up a res to accomodate it and a lid for 100 cuts or so, just wonderin if anyone has tinkered with them and what if any heat probs were encountered.

I'll set up a test res and compare fluid temps and vapor temp. The main concern would be creation of room temp fog cheaply, or would the fog/mist/vapor have to be in the cooler 60s range.

Ran across a thread or two on the topic while surfing one night, so I know others could be playing with the idea.

Would be interested if anyone else has tinkered with these and what problems did they encounter.

I haven't built one, but here are some thoughts that occured to me:

It sounds like you are planning on getting a Rubbermaid type container to put the vaporizer inside of and use the lid of the Rubbermaid to hold the clones; correct me if I'm wrong.

I have 4 of those vaporizers. They don't put out a whole lot of steam when you are talking about rooting clones, though. You'd have to keep the plants far enough from the hot steam to keep them from cooking, but close enough for the steam to keep the stems moist. As soon as the steam hits the walls of the container, it is going to condense and drip to the bottom of the container (the colder the room temp, the more condensation is going to occur). Clones that aren't pretty close to the steam outlet may not end up getting much moisture.

If needed, you can put a couple of inches of water in the bottom of the container and put airstones in it to keep the RH up. Condensing steam will accumulate water at the bottom, anyway, so you might as well aerate it. You will probably need to keep the vaporizer full enough to prevent it from floating around in the bottom of the container.

Bacteria growth & mineral buildup on the heating elements is a problem in vaporizers.

Maintaining temp inside could be a problem - vaporizers get pretty warm. Winter may not be so bad, but summer....

Good luck! I'd love to see how it turns out.

 Hey Ambre - yeah, that's what I was thinkin. :chin:

I'm thinkin time better spent on a stronger pump for the DIY aerocloner with 360 deg mist heads mounted on the manifold I built. My pond pump just doesn't throw it outta the mist heads enough.

I'l try to find the thread I noticed on the subject.

1toke i have thoughts on this.
i will see you in chat.
last time i brought this up i was laughed out of chat but you dont want a warm-mist humidifier..use a coolmist or an untrasonic.

i have some links for you...c ya in chat

ps- for those wanting to try this get something called a "Tropic-Aire" unit for reptile tanks. This is a great lil invention and with a lil' intuition you can build your own.

peas and be well

forgot to say that the only way this wont rot your stems is if its on a timer.

you need to dial this in to come on when the fog dissipates.. will take a few trys so dont use any clones of value while experimenting.

it will work.
but is it worth it?

I have been working on a fogger cloner. The only thing holding me back is finding a quality fogger that doesnt have ANY led's and is cheap. Ebay has been the best place so far, but a lot have LED's and I dont want to have to black them out. Heres a link to what Im talking about(didnt want to put ebay auctions up here have the sellers name and what not.) This one seems to not have LED's. I have also been thinking of a good way to put one in the growroom and foliar feed with it. Not sure the nutrient transfer, but it might work nicely.

EDIT: the link is the wrong one, but I'll leave the link cause it will definitely work. the one Im talking about though is a ten head mister/fogger.

the first link is legit, theyre just expensive.

i bought some nutes and media from them in the past, using a safe addy twice seperated from myself just because im a looney toon, but you should be fine its an organic living site for the most part, about as far from 'Hydro-Store" you can get-the dont carry everything either.

Have you used the tropic-aire? Seems like its better suited for mushrooms. I cant see it releasing enough moisture to the clones except in a pretty small container, but I could be wrong I have never used one. Seems like a couple differing size containers, a sponge and some tubing you could make one. Probably just cheaper to pay the 11.99 for the tropic aire.

you got it omega, thats where i got the idea :D

i think it can be built larger than its sold to output more but i forget the dynamics of it and never owned one. No havent used it but if going into this blind that would be my first choice to experiment with.

...i knew i knew u from somewhere:rasta:

 Yup the RainForest uses spinning misters or heads arranged in a circle. I tried mounting 360 deg mist heads on manifolds but my pump isn't strong enough.

greenbeards' Humidifier Cloner is more what I had in mind - someone beat me to it. :pointlaug

I've built Hibes' box,the tub with misting heads mounted to a manifold, and 10k's cloner thread is indeed a classic.

Back to research, the old shoe box bubble cloner is dialed in and working but all has to be perfect every time or it fails. 99% ain't good enough for me! :bat:
