Vacuum fan?

I found an old dirt devil and took it apart to check out the fan inside. I plugged it in and it was extremely loud, but it has an awesome pull to it. My question is: would hooking up a potentiometer or something adjust the voltage make it quieter? Would there be any other way of making the fan slower, in turn making it quieter?
I don't need a huge 50000 CFM fan, just something better than a PC fan to pull through a scrubber. Is this a plausible solution?
Here's some pics of it.

Nobody have anything?
Well I'll swing by walmart or something and pick up a rheostat. I think a simple light dimmer will do the job. I'll post later tonite if I find anything cool.

The light dimmer will not work properly. You are right with the rheostat idea. A high, med, low ceiling fan switch may work better.

Good idea screwdriver. Looks like lowes has em for about 3$ or so. I'll have to give this a try. Thanks.

I don't know about your vacuum, but mine is using something like 400W of power when on. Thats a shit load of power, you would save the money on e-bills if you bought a proper fan. And I wouldn't feel safe with dodgy electrics in my growroom, I'm paranoid about fires...

They do make a heavy duty fan switch (More than three dollars). The vacuum motor would probably be to noisy even at a reduced rate. That bathroom fan is also loud for a short distance it still may work. Bath fans can't push or pull with alot of restrictions like a scrubber. For a small cab I use a 12 pc fans and have made my own mini scrubber for it. Good luck.

i dont know if that bathrrom vent will work but i know a vacuum motor pulls too many amps and is too loud, plus its not designed for extended use. im thinking itll burn up real quick.

Yeah, I've done scrapped the vacuum motor idea. Lowes also has a Broan model 671 bath fan thats 70 cfm for 20$. Anybody tried this fan out? Also, what exactly is a sone? I realize its some sorta unit for measuring sound, but how's it measured?
