Just wanted to see when va growers put their seeds out, and about how many harvests do you get done. Im waiting for the weather warms up a little and just wanted to have a basic idea of when to plant and that sort of things.
Unless your down in Tidewater I would say no sooner than May 15 outside. Assuming you started them 3 weeks early under lights or in a greenhouse that should set you up for a July Fourth Celebration. Early plants are a slug magnet, and the deer have been stressed this Winter and will come out of the woods damn hungry I think. In the mountains I would wait til memorial Day.
What would be the downsides of planting them around march 15ish if the weather is around 60-70 degrees. The reason being that if i could start them now I could get about 3 harvests in the few spots that ive been able to find.
Dunno your location exactly but I'm in NC along the line. Anyway work your soil now... still too early to begin planting. Don't put anything in ground until the farmers start putting their crops in till about the first of May. I've seen in snow here in mid April.
But depending on the amount of seed you have. I know it is possible to pull about 3 rounds by the time fall comes around. Summer and warm weather usually last 4-5 months here. You just have to stagger the time right. For example round 1 in May. Round 2 in June. Round 3 in July. By the time your AF are finished should be about Sept/Oct right about the time of first frost.
Here's a link were you can check your frost dates. victoryseeds.com/frost/index.html. Start your seeds 2-3 weeks before the last frost and you should be good to go. Last year I started auto seeds every month and after the first 3 months had a harvest every month all the way through the beginning of November.
Really cold soil will cause plants to be weak and susceptible to problems. Unless you are shuttling plants in containers in and out you won't gain anything by getting going to early. And I am serious about the deer. They are hungry and stressed.
