Ive started up a grow 1 month ago.. the plants suffered of some kind of disease and i pulled them of the dirt.. now ive got a new closet and better eq. But ya know.. im så lazy that my old pots are still full of dirt - the only supplyment i used was some rootbooster.. so is it ok to use the old dirt for new seedlings?

thanks and best reggards..

people reuse soil all the time. wouldn't see why it would hurt especially if you didn't really add anything to it. I would recommend adding earthworm castings to your soil as it will improve soil quality considerably.

Go with Rockwool (my choice) or CoCo for indoor hydro. Cleaner is better indoors, in my opinion. My 2¢...........RD

"the plants suffered some kind of disease"!!!!! and you want to use the dirt over? What if that disease is soil borne? While some re use I have yet to meet a serious grower that does, that's not to say that I won't someday though.

It is always better to get new...but if you really can't, you can bake it a bit in the oven to sterilize it--

That's just what I was thinking. If I had any disease would certainly be tossing that soil out ASAP, cleaning the room from top to bottom, and start fresh with new soil. You never know, the soil could have came already contaminated. I've had that happened once I bought soil from a store that also sold plants, it came infested with gnats. Although I got a refund... it was a waste of time. So from now on, I only buy soil in places that don't sell plants, just ferts and soil and equip., etc.

I dunno if you are growin organic or with an organic compatible fert line but you could empty the pots into a large container and add worm castings, a little molasses, maybe a source of organic P or K like seweed meal and let the soil compost for 2-3 weeks.

The composting action will roast any pathogens that aren't of the insect kind, I have reused a fully anaerobic soil mix after mixing it every 2-3 days to aerate it and after 3 weeks the plants did great.

Plus soil is easily reused, tons of us recycle it either for outdoor or indoor use.

hey Suby, I didn't know that composting killed soil bourne pathogens, good thing to know. How about if someone had powdery mildew, would composting kill the spores too? Just curious.

Thanks,

Yup, most soild that smell or make plants sick are ones that have anearobic (non-oxygen using) soil biology developed in them.

We are after aerobic bacteria, well composted and mixed/turned soil will be of this variety, essentially aerobic bacteria will proliferate if the mix is porous enough and they easily outcompete the anaerobic kind given you make the soil conditions right.

Spores are everywhere all the time, there is no eliminating them 100% but again making the conditions favorable to aerobic soil biology will ensure that they outcompete pathogens for food and space thus making them less of an issue.

If you grow has an RH of 80%+ then mildew will be an issue regardless, but if your soil bin has mold or mildew on the tops, scrape it off, mix your soil well and increase air circulation and water the soil mix less.

throw that shit in the over for a lil bit kill all the bacteria that would have caused the disease
